Is there a way to shorten the baffles in an OEM exhaust to give my 97 a better throaty sound?
Anyone done something like this vs. spending large money on an exhaust.
With Arizona being a year round ride state (weather), I want to be able to have cages hear me when I roll up on them.

Get yourself a pair of stacks from say airflo - 36 X 4, either 90° or 45° opening.  Cut off the last 7 3/8" of the muffler cans and skin them so they will slip into the stacks easier (might have to sand off some high spots, lamp black or fast drying Krylon will help you find them).  Cut a 2X8" window out of the fwd end of the stacks to allow them to slip past the rear muffler hanger bracket.  Drill a 1/4" hole a couple inches in from the exit end, directly in line with the window you cut out. Make the muffler cans slippery with WD40.  Slip the stacks onto the muffler cans using a block of wood and hammer until they touch the back edge of the forward cover.  Insert the "silencers" you made into the stacks and pin them in place with one of the tip screws, into one of the threaded holes on the edge of the silencer (or the tab on the one piggy if you left their stubs on, like in the pic).  Now you have an exhaust you can make just as loud as the "ragnar cut" but you're not stuck with that racket as you would be if you actually ruined the exhaust with that mod.

Or you can call me and I can make you an outstanding exhaust system for more money that also makes more power and has several sound and custom look options.  Click on the "Horseapple Ranch" link that appears frequently at the top of this page.

The short answer is yes.  The long question is will you regret it after you do it.

The usual progression that most people take to modifying the stock exhaust usually starts with cutting the piggies off.

If you do that, I strongly suggest that you don't cut them off flush, but save an inch so you can rebuild your piggies later on if you can't stand the drone.  Several people have figured out several ways to re-install (rebuild) their piggies....but you have to have something to attach them to.

There are six baffles in each exhaust can/pipe.  Three rear and three front in each exhaust.  You can't get to them to modify them without first cutting the piggies off.

Cutting the piggies will NOT make the exhaust any louder, but it will give it a deeper tone.

At that point, you will start to induce "drone".  There is a reason mother Honda extended the exhaust out to the end of the can....and that would be the addition of the piggies to get rid of drone.

What is drone you ask?  Drone is the exhaust resonating inside your nice chrome exhaust tips.

If at that point the drone doesn't bother you, and you want more sound/louder, you can drill out the rear baffles.  There are three rear baffles on each exhaust can.  That will give you some growl and make the exhaust louder....but not alot.

If that's not enough sound/loudness/volume for you, there is a procedure called the Ragnar cut.  Basically, it's gutting the rear part of the exhaust can.  That will give you tons of volume and will make your Valk ready for Harley hunting.

The procedure MarkT is telling you does the same thing, but is a much cleaner way of doing it, AND it allows you to make the exhaust quiet again.  Listen to what he's telling you, he's a smart guy.   Wink

However, doing all of that WILL induce drone.  If you wear a helmet that covers your ears, ride behind a windshield, and/or have tinnitus, it WILL drive you batshit nuts.

That's when you'll be looking for a cure.  That's what MarkT is telling you in his post.  He has a cure for all of that.  Go back and re-read his post.   cooldude

You'll want to check these two links.  They will make sense of my post and will explain the piggie cutting, drilling the baffles (including the front baffles too) and the Ragnar Cut......

http://luiscajiga.com/Exhaustm2.htm

My Valk (before it's remodel) with the piggies cut and the rear baffles drilled.....

Honda Valkyrie - Lighting modificationspowered by Aeva

My Valk (again, before it's remodel) with the Ragnar cut.....

Honda Valkyrie - after Ragnar Cutpowered by Aeva

After I did all of that, the drone drove me nuts.  The sound of the exhaust was great....sounded seriously mean, but I couldn't take the drone and had to do something about it.  You might want to read this thread for the cure that I found.

http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,40398.0.html

Since I've already been there and done that, my advice would be to save your unmolested stock exhaust (hint....they arn't making stock OEM exhausts anymore)  and buy a set of Cobra exhausts or some other aftermarket or modded exhaust.

btw.....MarkT sells a really fine exhaust system.   cooldude

Maybe after 500 miles and im laying in bed ill hear it for a few hrs but im use to it and dont notice it much anymore. But I'm young(er) then most.  crazy2

While just cutting all but the last inch of the piggies off* does give it a bit deeper tone at idle, I do believe it does make the exhaust louder when running down the road, at least with Air Flow 18" flat cut stacks replacing the stock tips.  I have this setup on one bike and pure stock on the other (but with an Air Flow 18" tip), and the piggie-cut bike is definitely louder..... not really LOUD, but as loud as I would ever want, and while riders behind me may hear a drone, I never do.  Unless you are certain you want a real roar, I would start off with this easy mod first and see what you think.

*Note, one of the three screws holding on the tips goes into that last inch of one of the piggies, not that the tips won't stay put with only two of the three screws installed, they will.

Wow.  Fudgie, you know, if you're hearing it in bed when it's not there, you've damaged your hearing. And when you don't notice it much anymore - that's your hearing going away.  Take it from someone who has lost 40% of his hearing - you don't want to go there.  Once it's gone, you can't get it back.  Like you said - you're still young - damaging your hearing is something you will regret.  Not your mom bud.  But listen to your elders, young man!

Grumpy's tips will eliminate the drone if you have truck stacks and cut piggys and drilled baffles.  Added benefit is a boost in horsepower and torque. Look good too.  Hoser  cooldude

I did the cut the piggies off thing. I cut about half off, added truck stacks and Grumpy's tips. I have tinnitus really bad and the drone is noticeable and amplifies my tinnitus, but after years of having it, I kinda just ignore it. Ear plugs do not help. maybe I'll try the ear buds, but not the kid rock. I think the Kid Rock would cause permanent damage to my hearing. Grin

I cut about 10" off of mine about 2" behind the front baffle. This winter im going to do markt's silencer because the wife does not like the drone on long trips. Also have grumpys tips. You can see it in my signature picture.
