Well not much but I did a bit more diag thanks to Bert who stopped by. While I kept it running via throttle control Bert checked pipe temp. We discovered that #4 AND #5 were not firing, pipes were cold. Just for the hell of it I bought 6 new plugs & replaced #4 & #5. No dice. Bert also pointed out that I had the petcock line run to #5 so I swapped it back to #6 like it should be.
Interestingly I shut the gas off & ran it until it started to shutdown a bit & it actually smoothed out just a little. A few minutes later I turned the gas back on to pull it back into the garage & for whatever reason the popping stopped but still no idle.
I guess my next move will be to pull the tank to check the coil wiring & just for fun I'm going to eliminate the extra inline fuel filter.
I do have a question, if I have the throttle cables adjusted out of whack can that cause the no idle & the manual idle knob to become non functional? It was several months between tear down & reassembly.  Embarrassed

Hey Eddie I Don't Think That The Cables Would Interfere With The Idle Adjust Unless They Keep The Spool Where The Cables Are From Moving, But I Don't Think So. If The Coils Check Out You May Have A Bad Pick-Up At The Timing Wheel, But I Would Make Sure That The Coils And The ECM Are Working Properly First Before Digging Into The Trigger Wheel Pick-Ups.

Eddie

You may want to read this thread from the Tech section.  Near the end is some interesting looking crud he got out of the carb.

It can have an effect on the idle knob, found that out myself while working on the rebuild I did a couple years ago. Since then when I have to remove those cables, I mark the shafts where the nuts are with a Sharpie so I can get an approximate setting when I reinstall. Always loosen them at the top before removal. I doubt it would have an effect on idle, if it did it would affect all the cylinders. Strange that #4 & 5 weren't firing, they're on opposite sides and different coils. I'll have to check the schematic to see which trigger wheel pickup is involved.

I try to mark the cables also.  I also put an O for outside and an I for inside on the two cables.  Eddie as John mentioned #4 and #5 are on separate coils.  Do you have one of the old spark plug testers kind of like a 12V test light to check it for firing? You could also hold the plug onto a good ground and look for spark.  More dangerous though.  If the plugs have been changed and the spark plug is firing it must not be getting gasoline if those cylinders were cold at the exhaust.  I know I am beating the proverbial dead horse but there can be fuel in the bowl and if the jet is clogged again the fuel won't be pulled into the mix so no kaboom.

Here's any easy way to check for spark; stick a small bolt in the plug cap and hold it. If you hair stands on end and you pee down your leg....yep, got voltage there.  2funny 2funny

All righty then...we may need to find another way to do that....Why not just stick your tongue in the spark plug cap.  Grin

Cranked it back up again tonight just for the hell of it.
It will idle with the "choke" fully engaged. Still runs poorly, popping & missing until WOT.
Ran it with the gas cap popped open, no change. Pulled a couple wires, #4 & 6 & they both are firing. Still absolutely will NOT idle unless choke fully engaged.
Still stumped.

Been very busy working on the house & property. We got a larger than anticipated tax refund & I vowed to spend it all on much needed improvements. I still have a lot of privacy fence to replace along with fixing the ceiling in the Valkyrie garage. Somewhere in between I will get back on the '97 issues.  Wink

No idle without the choke sure smacks of clogged slow jets. I know you're looking forward to pulling the carbs again.  Angry
