My bike would't  keep running. I checked everything from pet rooster to electrical. The next step was carb jet cleaning. I followed smog removal instructions to get to the carbs. Since I went this far smog removal was accomplished. The freeze plugs used were actually 0.43 inches that I got from Bennet bros. parts. I used the trimmed and plugged stock end pieces for the ports by the headers. Yes you do have to take the headers off to get at the bottom area. I'm trying to remove the carb bowls as a complete bank. The screws are not backing out and a impact wrench won't fit. Would soaking in JB blaster work on the thread corrosion? Any better ideas would be REALLY appreciated. John

Following is a link to the thread where I got some helpful advise I got when I did my rejet project.  I found the JIS bit to be a big help.

Run some seafoam and Techron thought the gas system.  I mean a whole cans of the stuff. And don't stop at a single application. Do everything you can before resorting to removing the carburetors.

Removing the carburetors will open up a plethora of potential pitfalls and problems you want to avoid if at all possible.

No bull!

What are JIS bits and where would I find them? Does anyone make a small right angle impact driver?

If you have the carbs out you can get a small pair of vice grips or needle nose grips on the screws. This will break them free and then replace them with regular bolts.

Kingbee and Pharmboy told me about the JIS bits, and I am glad they did.  It made getting the screws off the carb bowls much easier.  You can them from the following company:

What are JIS bits?? They are a Japanese bit which is what is used on these carburetors..If I remember correctly I think it stands for Japanese Industrial Standard.. The screws are not the popular Philips head that we are all used to.. The bits that will work with a ratchet makes this job a lot easier as you can put a lot of up pressure on those screws which helps to not bugger them up..

You might try using the phillips that comes in the tool kit if you have that. That phillips is the JIS pattern and the correct size. I used it with the "T" handle and was able to remove them easily -- well, with some force. But that was much easier than anything else I tried.

The short, about 3" offset ratchet  screwdriver set for $8 from HB has a perfect IJS philips head and works great as per the tech article. I did sprat the screw heads with JB Blaster and tapped the screw bit up into the screw before trying to remove them. You must apply as much upword pressure as possible to prevent striping the screw head. Now one of the brass  jet slots broke. spray with JB again ,tap and slot it again with a dremel.
