How about the left side exhaust cover?

There's two "tangs" or "tabs" that interlock the front and rear sections of the cover which are supposed to be covered with a 1/4" piece of rubber or silicone tubing. Mine had hardened & pretty much gone.

Fixing this stopped a rattle similar to that being described in this thread.

I do ride the bike A LOT but the noise is NOT normal and drives me nuts.
Noises are caused by vibrations vibrations are caused when something is not right.  Sometimes those vibrations are caused by something being worn or damaged and if left unchecked cause more damage and cost more $$$ to fix.  So I will continue to tear into this until I figure it out but I will do it between rides.

It is the stock exhaust with the cover removed and the truck stacks added.  I can say 100% that this noise is not emanating from the exhaust system in any way.

Ok so knocked off the intake o-rings and Petcock vacuum line yesterday.  The Coverset is still on back order until like Nov 9  or something like that.

I also did the rocker adjustments and set all to spec.  50% were a little loose but nothing unusual.

I did notice however that Cylinder 2 and 4 are running lean as the plugs were quite white in colour.  Not sure of my next step there.  I may go through the steps to set the pilots correctly and see if that clears up the lean condition.  I really dont want to pull the carbs.

Do you have one of those laser cut "Valkyrie" radiator insignia plates?

When I was trying to locate a noise similar to yours, I discounted it as the source over and over thinking that no way could it make a noise.

Finally out of desperation, I wadded some paper towel & inserted it behind the plate. No more rattling sound.

Same here. I removed it and still have the noise.
I have found that cylinders 2and4 are running lean so that is my next step. Problem is the pilots seem stuck and I can't turn them so may need to pull the carbs.

Ok guys there are not that many things that could make the noise.  Sounds like time to take the wheel, pumpkin, drive shaft and u-joint off and inspect.  Any problem with the drive train will be fairly obvious except maybe the joint you may have to look closely at that to be sure

Maybe try taking it to a Dyno tester were you could stand next to the bike as it revs up in gear.

Note that in my case this is NOT running gear causing the noise.  It is the ENGINE.

Hi all, my first post on this forum. I know this is an old thread but I was wondering if anyone here found the cure for this? I have the same thing on my 98 tourer.

My frustrating annoying noise turned out to be my
Baker Air Wings... The chrome ball had dropped off
of one side and that side would make noises some
of the time (but not all the time)...

I've been down all the roads and it's side streets described by this thread & some time ago gave up & quit worrying.

However, reading this & applying it to my experiences suggests my problem may be the ECT because of the intermittent behavior I've observed on several occasions as in stopping for lunch & the problem seeming to have disappeared, only to resume twenty miles down the road.

Can anyone tell me how the sensor operates? Is normal operating temperature grounded, causing timing to advance or is it the other way around?

What is the simplest way to test the functionality in this situation? Could it be as simple as disconnections the wire & going for a ride?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a test for the ECT in the Honda Tech manual, I recall seeing it. I know that timing advances when the coolant temp is cold and retards when it hits a certain temperature.  http://www.valkyrienorway.com/download.html
