I have a 1997 tourer and have a possible vacuum leak. What is the best way to check vac and also hose placement . By looking I have a hose on petcock, intake tube on 3,4.and 6, and a hose on rear of tank. Help please.

Pull those lines off and look at the condition V-SIX,, also the other three intake tubes have caps on them,, pull them to check their condition. If they are failing it will be obvious.

That's a vent hose out the back of the tank, it's supposed to have a vacuum leak  ... If you have a hard time finding good vacuum caps, I learned here about making your own from a half inch piece of vacuum line with a proper sized little bolt hose clamped into it - I used those crummy vinyl caps from the auto parts store for a while, and later replaced them all with new OEM caps. There's O-rings on the bottoms of all the chrome intake runners, if there's "chewing-tobacco" stains around the base of any of the runners, you might want to replace the O-rings too... it is real easy to reach in there where the caps and lines are if you have an intake runner out... -Mike

It happens slow. A year or so ago, I went after a couple of tobacco stains. I changed the O-rings and the vacuum line to the petcock (it was stiff and old) and all the caps on the backs of the runners. My bike is de-smogged, so that covered most of the vacuum issues. I couldn't tell anything was wrong with the way it ran before, but I could tell it ran better after... As Mike said, it's ever so slight. I didn't notice any rough running or anything on either bike. I just didn't like the looks of it and having to clean it. It's a very easy job.

Probably the hardest thing is keeping the the new o-ring in place when reinstalling it. I used just the slightest dab of RTV to keep it in place.

You all forgot that there are also 6 Bulk Hose Vacuum lines (Part #95005-35001-20M) one on the side of each Carb. When I first got my bike it was running poorly, I first checked all the typical vacuum lines mentioned above to find them okay. I found all 6 Bulk Hose Vacuum lines ends were rotted and cracked. I replaced them all and the bike ran good.
FYI - you don't have remove the carbs to inspect the bulk hose vacuum lines. Look on the right side of each carb. It's small tubing only 2.5" long.

I always learn something when I read this forum. Just had my 97 valk tourer triked which means I am Committed to taking care of all the maintenance issues that come up long term. I do have tobacco stains on one cylinder. Didn't know what it was or why. Now I do. I appreciate this site.

FYI - you don't have remove the carbs to inspect the bulk hose vacuum lines. Look on the right side of each carb. It's small tubing only 2.5" long.
Good call... the little hoses that go to the cut valves... I've never messed with those... I remember reading about some folks replacing their cut valves... $50 each! -Mike

Just got done putting intake o rings, 3 new vac hoses, 1 to the petcock, new spark plugs, WOW! I DIDNT NO WHAT I WAS MISSING, The valk will get with the program now. forgot to put a spark plug boot back on, and thought i really messed something up, put it back on and yeeeehaw. 60 dollar fix and a little time consuming for the first time, but i wouldnt hesitate to do it.. found 3 cracks in old hoses..
