The Landmass Between Mobile And New Orleans

Let's try to put all the problems noted over the last couple of days and their solutions in one post.

MP has a '97.  Put on an '01 wheel and had to use the '01 rotor.  Conventional wisdom.  1 for the keep the rotor with the wheel proponents.

Mirion has a '97 also.  Installed a 2000 wheel but the '99 I/S rotor hit the caliper.  Had to use a '97 rotor.  Doesn't meet conventional wisdom.  Same style wheel and rotor.  Same year bike.  Different results.  One for the match the rotor style and the year of the bike.

RP has a '97 also.  He has an early style wheel and a new style wheel.  He uses the style rotor that goes with the wheel.  1 more for conventional wisdom.

I'm sure someone can chime in with another example of having to match the rotor with the bike not the wheel.  Sandy for example.

The best I can come up with is there is no rule.  If you buy an extra rear wheel and it is not the same style that came on your Valk, buy it with the matching rotor or buy the rotor that would originally go with it.  This way you at least have both style rotors to try if the one that goes with the wheel doesn't work.

I was lucky, Daytona gave me the info to identify an early style wheel from a late model wheel by the stampings.  Both my wheels are early style.  Since I didn't have a matching rotor for the spare wheel, I just transferred the rotor.

I have a 98 Tourer with a newer wheel and rotor on it. It's been on for years. Works fine

Do you remember what year your rotor/wheel is?

Whenever I got my chrome wheels the rear wheel came off a Interstate with the right rotor on it. It fits with no problem. Looking at the rims at DLP  the early years rims cost more than the I/S and the 2000 up rims. Like yourself a sure way to look at numbers would be nice so you could get the right rotor if needed.
