If it was perfect like new $700 is probably fair.  Used looking with very nice splines should be had for no more than 500 bucks or so

Assuming one has all the required tools on-hand to rebuild a final drive, would it be cheaper to buy parts and repair a defective unit instead of buying a questionable used one?

Some of us have done this.

One way is to buy a  whole new "gear set" and assorted shims and
use your skills as an automatic transmission rebuilder  Wink to rebuild
a worn our final drive... reasonably inexpensive.

http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Honda/Motorcycle/1997/GL1500CT+AC/FINAL+DRIVEN+GEAR/parts.html

The way some of us did it was real cheap, though... the actual teeth in
the gear set that get worn out is a pressed in part.

The gear set on a 1500 wing isn't interchangeable with a Valkyrie, but the
all-important pressed-in teeth are interchangeable. And the flange on
the 1500 wing is the same part number (same part) as a Valkyrie.

It is easy (ebay, trike builders, ...) to find un-worn-out 1500 wing finals,
you can (the shop guy at the local NAPA store did it for me) press out the
teeth from both gear sets and press the good ones into your Valkyrie
gear set. By not changing gear sets (just the teeth) you can probably avoid
having to have the re-shimming skill-set, and just put your
Valkyrie final back together with good teeth. And you should make sure
to obtain a good wing final with its matching good flange, and use that flange.

There are only a couple of Honda final-drive tools which I don't have at the moment, and by next year all the stuff required to completely rebuild a final drive will be in my toolbox.

Next task will be to get spare parts. Including seals, bearings, pinion shaft...anything that could wear and may some day be discontinued.

what is the difference btwn the gear sets? I saw this brought up yrs ago, but I never saw answers.
And the flange set has to be '90 and newer, '88-'89 have six pins.

They're so much alike that I had to write "Valkyrie" on my Valkyrie one to
keep from getting them mixed up.  They're not the same part number.
I dropped the 1500 wing one into my Valkyrie final after it was apart,
and it didn't spin right.

Okay, I've seen plenty of articles on final drive, what's the failure rate and why? Lack of maintenance I hope, but from what I read based on comments and discussions from this group that doesn't seem likely. I don't recall much activity on the Wing final drive in other forums. ?

seen my posts. I kinda hijacked the thread with pics showing added boot on the drive shaft. in my case the drive shaft seal failed allowing the grease to escape. In my case I was on my third tire change. second tire change everything looked great. manual does call for new seal every time driveshaft is pulled out of the cup. My experience after two removals of any seal or O-ring a new one is required.

Thanks for info. I will do more searching on your previous post. Plan on getting into bike over winter with carbs. de-smog and rear end. Just turned 20,000 never been touched, just ridden a little and garaged a lot. I've had it less than a year but thinking its a keeper. Did fluids when purchased, still working on comfort level

man the cost of a used one at $700 or rebuilding one by pressing stuff on and off and having to set the backlash all of that is above my paygrade. I'm just glad I was able to get a valkyrie pumpkin in really good shape locally on Craigslist for about $175. But I think it's difficulties obtaining parts like these that may keep Valkyries from going forever and ever.

if u use the same gear set and spacer/shim, just pressing in/out the center splines,(I have just done this in Feb), then setting backlash is not required.

I have 3 or 4 spares, and a set of gears I bought long ago. Oh and a box full of alternator covers I bought when they were cheap.  Grin

I'd take $700 for my spare too Grin. I actually got not only the pumpkin and driveshaft but I also got the whole rear wheel as well as the brake caliper for $175.  one reason I got it so cheap was I was the guy that had to pull it all off of there
