Good post. Speaking of Irish tunes - here's Jeff Ward's site - sings Irish tunes in pubs in SE Wisconsin - an old family friend and very talented singer. He played at the post-funeral celebrations of both my parents. When in WI I always make it a point to see where he's playing and go there to have a Guinness and some great tunes. Written by Stephen Foster in 1854. Well-known and popular in its day, both in America and Europe, the song asks the fortunate to consider the plight of the less fortunate and ends with one of Foster's favorite images: "a pale drooping maiden".
