I use either hotwire or hotel tonight and make reservations about 20 minutes in advance. Get some great rates
Anything they sell a room for at that late time beats nothing.

I like trivago, they show you a lot of hotels with the pricing. priceline can save some money, but a pain to use.

Travego is the worse experience I ever had. Made a reservation in Missouri and they set it up in Wisconsin. I had to go thru my credit card company to get a refund.

I use Trivago and then I call the hotel.

They usually match if not beat the price.

Ive done that and got burned. Now I plan my hotels ahead of time. Not to mention no cell service.

Happened twice in WY.

We decided to go through Idaho on our way to Glacier from Yellowstone. Didn't book a room cause there were plenty of hotels in this small town. After 10 hrs on the road through several cold storms and heat, we come into the town of Salmon and see a lot of little league ball players. Im like that's not good! Every hotel was sold out. Nearest place we found was 2 hrs away in Montana. Had to go through the pass at dark and they were fighting forest fires too.

Never doing that again. Most of my July/Aug trip is already booked.

Did tht in 06 to Sturgis. Slept at a rest stop in Bettendorf IA. Next night slept next to my bike along a fence in a parking lot in Sturgis. When I left 2 weeks later thru NE I stopped in IA and slept on a picnic table. Rained so hard I had to sleep on the sidewalk between the bathrooms under cover. Man I slept good tho!
