The side covers hook onto a tab on the part that has the seat lock.  What is the part with the seat lock called and where do I get a new one?  The left tab is broken and will not hold the side cover.

#15 center cover. Kind of expensive though. You might try eBay for a used one.

Ouch, expensive is right.  Thank you.  That gives more to search on.

My Interstates left side tab is broken off also. I inserted a rubber grommet in the slot, and it holds the side cover tab well.

Or Pinwall Cycle Motorcycle Salvage (which also has an Ebay store).  But I don't do Ebay, and hate having to search through pages and pages of stuff, so I just called them direct, told them what I needed (rear wheel), and they had one, and we made a deal, and it was here in a few days.

It's always important to ask for pictures or part quality assurances though, because discovering it's junk after you get it sucks big time.

Yes, keep in mind that side cover tabs break all the time, and there are dozens of threads on here about it, and even a Shoptalk article on home repairs and work-arounds.  (glue and clips and Velcro and grommets, yada)

Meathead, I like the rubber grommet idea.  I'll see if I can find on the just right size.  Failing that, I have another idea from the message thread mentioned by Jess.  Thank you.

Same deal on my I/S. Small sheet metal screws towards the top of the side cover. Started out with Velcro BUT save yer time go straight to sheet metal screws. AND I'm here ta tell ya the side covers chances of departing at speed have been lowered to slim slim and almost none!  Roll Eyes RIDE SAFE.

Major mistake made by many is how they remove the side cover. You have to pull the rear out first so the cover is at a slight angle, then remove the front from the center cover. If you look at the tab on the side cover you'll see it has a slight hook built into it and if you try pulling straight out, guess what happens....either the tab breaks eventually or the slot in fits into on the side cover. As for a good source for replacement/repair, get one of those kits that uses UV to cure the glue in seconds and repair the one you have while it's still on the bike. I used my kit to repair my son-in-law's sunglasses a year ago, they broke in the center above the nose piece. They were just down for a visit last week and he's still wearing them. I repaired a plastic radiator cover for my old 1200 nearly 3 yrs. ago and it's still in place.
