a 2000 I/S with 57k new tires and ultimate seat for $4500 or a 2008 Royal Star Venture with 34k for $3800. gonna ride the venture tomorrow and the I/S on Friday.  pro's and cons for both so gonna ride them both and go from there.

Well, if you are looking for opinions. It would be a no brainer for me. There is nothing wrong with the Yamaha. The Interstate is far and above worth more than the $700 difference.

I've got a Venture sitting in my garage that a buddy gave me.

It's not a runner and I've never rode one.

Next to the I/S, there's no comparison, IMHO.   But that's just me, all I've owned for about the last 20 years is a Valkyrie. Smiley

They probably weight about the same, and they claim 97hp, but the I/S just looks lighter and faster.

This guy liked it.

Isn't that Yamaha's answer to the Gold Wing?

My buddies is just the Royal Star, no fairing or trunk. I'd be surprised if they have 97 horses. But he keeps up just fine. It's never had a problem, other than a Dunlop rear tire coming apart at 75 on the freeway. It's a good bike, but the Interstate is better in my opinion.

Make sure your test rides include the hardest type of riding, like inside the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) box, not just cruising around.  Do some tight turns and circles.  See if that Venture isn't top heavy compared to the Valk.  Of course, the Interstate is a little more top heavy than the other Valks, but not like the Venture.

I admit to prejudice.  I only rode a Venture for about 20 minutes once.

Either bike is a bargain I think.  Great that you can test ride both.  I can not comment on riding the Venture, but Jess is correct it is more top heavy.  The one draw back with the Valkyrie and Goldwing is also the big reason that makes it so great.  That is the flat six engine ( the best cycle engine in the world ) just restricts your feet and thus comfort level.  For many no problem.  For many more they pass or move on from this bike for this reason.  I see that comment time and time again in motorcycle columns.  Best of Luck.

It's a dang shame that Yamaha did not incorporate the 1700 V-Max tuned for cruiser style into their new Venture and Eluder.  Their reps say the research shows riders prefers V-Twins.  I think they talked to too many Harley Folks because I think there would be a big demand for a great, smooth, well behaved riding style, V4 that makes gobs of power.  The new Goldwings are moving very well, the Ventures are gathering dust.

when riding the Interstate,  make sure you have all 6 spark plugs connected.  I would think even 5 cylinders will run smoother than most 4 bangers, especially 2 bangers...

Apples to oranges, one is a bad ass power cruiser which is extremely capable as a long distance touring machine, the other is a slow bad handling myopic machine which has ZERO personality and nobody would even give it a second glance.....is that too rough?  Evil

Jerry, Did I mention I cheap... on a budget and my bike fund is not to that level yet. It looks like a great bike and I have messaged the owner. My budget is just shy of asking price.

I know that's what he told me ... unsolicited... just offered it when I inquired about the bike. But I have a bike fund.... it keeps growing but I really stick to it. I am just shy of the mark.

I would offer him what you have in the budget. If he balks just leave your phone #. He may need to sell it worse than you think. Don't overestimate his position in the offer. Just my  2 cents!

Ok, my 2cents worth. Over my 50 years of riding, and 9 different bikes, 7 have been Hondas. The best I can remember, I've ridden about 160, 000 miles, I know that's not as much as some, but more than others. When I sold my VTX 1300 and my 1998 Valk to get my 2014 1832 Valk I missed having 2 bikes. Went on the hunt for an old classic,  and found it. A 1975 original GL 1000.  It had only 18, 000+ miles on it, and had sat for like 3 years. So with carb rebuild and some other cooling tube gaskets, fuel pump, clutch cable, stering stem roller bearings, I have a total of $1, 659.00  and now she looks and rides great. So do I need or want anoyher bike? NO! AND NO! Again. For my day rides with the group, the GL is great. And when it's time for cross country, I bolt on a Viking travel trunk right behind me to use as a back rest, and with the Honda leather bags gives me plenty of room for packing. I only have a one car garage, so with the Valkyrie, the GL and my daughters Yamaha 550 Maxim,  the garage is full. I don't think I will ever need another bike. Riding the Valk gets great looks and comments,  then when on the GL the comments are even more fun. 26, 000 miles on the Valk, and 22, 000 on the GL! I'm good for the rest of my riding years, OH I'm looking forward to many more to have. RIDE ON!
