I got a new computer for work today... it's a hoss! 16 gig of memory... 512 gig SSD...
4 7th generation I7 cores. It came with Winders 10 on it, I never even booted that,
I installed Fedora 27, everything worked right away. It is powerful enough to run
several virtual machines at the same time for compiling and development work.

The best part: that's it sitting next to the pen  Smiley ...

But is it strong enough to power the Transporter?

Yes, but not while the VMs are running  Wink ...

I'm fully 100% retired from Clemson... I continue to work
on the same open source project I was already working on, but now I
only go in a couple of days a week and it is OK if I was to disappear
for several weeks at a time to ride motorcycles or whatever...

I like being retired  cooldude

I really need to give desktop Linux a try again, it's been a LONG time since I gave it more than a cursory look (As in late 1990's)... Still love it for the back end though, but I run my Linux servers init 3... (Serk.net is a Debian VM)

Maybe I'll spin up a VM and toss Debian on it just for S&G...

I kind of love back ends too.  Evil

But besides different holes and plugs and lights, the back and front of my desktops look about the same.

I'm saving up about 1000 questions on computers for Roanoke.

I'm just like 8-Ball in Kelly's Heros..... Oh man, I just drive them, I don't know how they work.

Question for you guys,

I usually build my own computers after the Dell experience and have done quite a few. They work well no bloat ware and I choose the OS that I want to use the board and all the other factors. The cost is lower they are future proofed and most are 4 to 12 core with SSD's.  I need one for work and really just not in the mood to build another what brand do you guys recommend? I know this may sound stupid but is Hoss a brand?

All depends on what you're after. IMHO these days the pre built ones are all pretty similar in quality (Luckily I don't work for HP anymore so I don't contractually have to recommend 'em any longer Cheesy )

For my main rig I like to build my own, for the kid's computers I prefer to buy pre built and just do a fresh OS install to remove all the bloatware the manufacturer puts on there.

(Actually, as prices have dropped the kids are all on laptops now, which kind of precludes home built unless you're REALLY dedicated...)

(I've actually had decent experience with Dells, and Asus, and Gateway, and even HP personally...)

That thing I got is an Intel NUC enthusiast. You can look it up on Amazon. There are
numerous different models, several as small as the one I got... I got the highest end
one of that size.

I found it because I wanted small and no NVIDIA... NVIDIA is all closed, so you have
to get their drivers as already compiled opaque blobs from the vendor if you use Linux.

Here's Linus Torvalds (the Bill Gates of Linux) talking about NVIDIA... bad words and rude
gestures...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYWzMvlj2RQ

Intel stuff is pretty open.
