I've had a cell phone for 15 or 20 years. For phone calls. When I go on
rides, more than just and hour or so, I usually take my little Canon camera.
More and more often I find that I wish I could take a picture and don't have
the camera. But I always have my phone.

I've always had a flip-phone - it fits in your pocket and doesn't get in the way
and my share of our cell phone bill is $33, and the phone has always been
free. And it has a 1 megapixel camera.

Sure... it can take a picture...

Bleghh...

A few months ago I upgraded my flip-phone to a ruggedized flip-phone
with a five megapixel camera. My old flip phone was way better in
every way, except for the camera. The new phone was clumsy to use,
thick and heavy. And instead of having a crummy camera, it had a
mediocre one.

Bleghh...

So... now I'm assimilated into the smart phone world...

I was still stuck on the idea of never carrying around one of those "phablets"
that people have stuck to their sides. I got an Iphone SE for $235 at Amazon,
and slapped in my SIM card and it turned right on... it is thinner than
either of my old phones and essentially as small. And pictures? HOLY COW!

Me and the dog went on a walk down to the creek today, and I took the phone...

The only thing smartphones do not do as well as all my flip phones I have had is make/receive calls and hold a charge as long.

US Cellular is trying to phase out flip phones and the last few years have made owning a basic smartphone cheaper in monthly payments than the few flip phones they have left to offer.

Pretty soon flip phones will be non-existent forcing you to get a smartphone.  I preferred my old Moto G smartphone over my Samsung smartphone I have now for making calls, battery longevity, and ease of use.  But, the Samsung has more hard drive GB space for more app downloads as well as better camera for pics.

Amazes me the new smartphones in terms of quality of pictures they take.

Just be sure you do NOT drop them and get a good case since just today at work signing off on a shipment delivery with their company smartphone I handed his company phone back to him and thought he had it in his hands and he dropped it on concrete and smashed the screen, but still worked.  He did not seem to worried about it said will tell his boss they should have had a better quality case and that would not have happened.

get a good case

I'm doomed, I guess...

It is barely small enough now, thinner and lighter, but a little bit
taller and wider than my good-old-flip-phone...

I will admit I'm kinda surprised you of all people went with the walled garden BSD running portable computer instead of the more open, Linux based portable computer... Wink

There's nothing open about android... the whacky always-changing proprietary devices it must run
on causes there to be no chance that any main-line linux will run there. Maybe one day.

Anywho... I want to make phone calls, take pictures and be small... iphone SE is the only game in town
as far as I can tell...

The first picture in this thread is an old flip-phone picture I had on photostash.

Because of the "DANGER! DANGER WILL ROBINSON!" problem with photostash,
I had to jump through hoops to get its URL. Then I realized (and I have seen this
on other posts from other folks as well) that the picture was being blocked by
my firefox when I viewed the thread, so I bet it was blocked by other's browsers
as well.

Anywho... I just downloaded all my photostash pictures to another web site so
that I wouldn't loose control of them, and so that I could make them show
up in posts...

There's a button that the moderators could push to get started getting off the blacklist,
but it involves way more than just a button. I'm not sure what all they'd have to do,
but it would probably involve some kind of constant attention to make sure that
every file on photostash was just a jpg and not some mal-file...

I take 95% of my ride and fishing photos with my Samsung smart phone, as does the Mrs when she shoots from her passenger perch on the bike. On longer trips we use my previous model one with a tether attached, as I can't afford to lose my current phone which I use for work. Outside of using a $1200.00 + camera with proper lenses, tripod, light settings, etc most of the photos and videos we take are more than good enough. Both have voice command so it's easy to shoot pics when riding or fishing.
Never use it as a phone when riding (one reason to ride is to get away from the phone), but I basically live on it when travelling for work and texting messages and photos effortlessly is a God-send for keeping in touch with my two daughters living 14 and 2 hours away.

I wouldn't want to be without a camera where you live  cooldude

I took a picture of our new (a month or so) beaver dam yesterday...

I hope I'm not this way, but have you ever noticed that some folks are "over pictured"?
A big group of people is at some happening place, and if you look around a bunch
of them are experiencing whatever is going on through the screen of their smart-device...

Especially when the "happening place" is something like The Grand Canyon... if/when I'm
ever at The Grand Canyon I'm going to look at The Grand Canyon... there's plenty of
good pictures of it on the Internet for later  Smiley

oh boy, do I ever agree with you on this. We do a LOT of travelling to great places on the bike and on our other outdoor adventures and always take pictures when we see beautiful sights. That being said, we don't live through the camera, preferring instead to "do" rather than " watch or record" for the most part. I like to keep separate ride photo files especially from our longer rides to new places we discover and all my trout fishing is catch and release so a photo is my only record of catch, but other than that, I'm like you and prefer to live my adventures through my own two eyes and not just through the eye of a camera lens. One learns quickly that just because you take a lot of photos doesn't mean you take a lot of GOOD photos.

ps.... I'd be more than happy to take the time to show you or other members here around this neck of the woods a little bit if you ever made your way up here  cooldude

I agree on the case Mike.  First time you slide if off the chair arm or table and it drops 3 ft. you will thank us for insisting.  Speck makes good cases with rubber grippers.  Oh and also the little glass covers for the screen are worth the price too.  I just traded a Galaxy Note 4 for a S9+ and it had the case and screen cover and I sprung for new ones as the old ones had done their job well.

If they make one for your phone - OtterBox makes great cases - like practically the gold standard of phone cases.
