From Bank of America
"A Bank of America executive announced Tuesday that the bank will stop lending money to companies that manufacture "military-style" rifles that are available for civilians to purchase.

Anne Finucane, Bank of America’s vice chair, told Bloomberg TV that the bank doesn’t want to “underwrite or finance military-style firearms” and has told a number of gun manufacturers that it will no longer do business with them."

Took me 30 minutes of hold time, but I am no longer a holder of a Bank of America credit card (After 25 years or so).
Funny thing.  The very nice gal on the other end of the line was offering me reward points to stay a customer..  I told her I had to go with my conscience on this, and that she was very nice and professional.

I've had nothing good come from doing business with bank of America. Know others with bad stories. As long as everything is perfect in your banking world, they might be OK. If something hinky comes up, good luck!

Waiting to make sure Wells Fargo continues to stand tall, and then I'll REALLY piss the spousal unit off and switch the main bank I've used for 30 years to them and away from Bank of the Northern Hemisphere because of this...

I've hated all banks and cut ties with them over 30 years ago.  Credit Unions only.

I would have banked with USAA, if I needed them.

Did several mortgages with Wells Fargo and five thumbs up (but no banking).

To my knowledge, Banks serve no one but themselves (and giant depositors).

It's one thing for a bank or co to stop giving NRA members discounts (I've never felt entitled to discounts).  It's another thing for banks to say they will never offer business financing or other services to any firearm related company.  One is image, the other is real damage to the industry.

I'll admit, it's gonna suck, BOFA's online automated bill pay is top notch, and we've got so many "things" set up automatically moving money into and out of that account (All out require an active action every month of course, but it's still all setup nice and easy) but this pisses me off...

We briefly switched to USAA for our banking but their online billpay sucks compared to BOFA, I hate to admit. I still keep a USAA checking account for my "fun allowance" but gonna look deeper into Wells Fargo if, and that's a big IF they stand up to the crybullies on this...

Could your USAA connection (family) get you into Navy Federal CU?  After having no local bank for 25 years, I got with them a couple years ago just for a local bank.  I don't do anything with them but keep some local money there, but they have a pretty good reputation.

I haven't forgotten your advice to set up bill pay, but I'm still writing checks.  Age and laziness and new tricks and all.

Speaking of which, I guess I have to do my taxes tomorrow.  I've done all the bike, house, fence, and lawn work I can to avoid it as long as possible (and I'm too sore to do any more of that for awhile).

Which reminds me of undergrad where you never saw people doing so much dorm room cleaning, window washing, laundry, ironing or anything else possible to avoid studying for finals.

Navy Federal Credit Union (ALL service members (regardless of branch), dependents, family members, and DOD civilians AND Veterans eligible to join) is a fine institution. They have a pretty good online bill pay system as well. I've been a member since Aug 1984 (when I got to Pensacola as an Ensign).

It's funny, the problem with USAA for bill pay is that they're TOO good... When we used them for billpay, they would send the checks, but wouldn't debit our account until the receiving part cashed them.

BOFA would debit our account as soon as they sent the checks.

Now, from a CPA point of view, the USAA method is FAR preferable.

But from a non-CPA couple trying to keep their bills paid up and making sure their account doesn't go negative... the BOFA method is, sadly, far preferable...

So here we are...

Bank of America, First Midwest and Capital One are at the top of my never use list. I use a local credit union for both business and personal banking. And I may have 4 mortgages (construction notes)  open at a time and only work with a private broker for those as they are much more competitive than a commercial bank. I still have a line of credit with Chase but have not used it since 2009 when they decided my line of credit only needed to be 1/10th of the original line I had. Funny how now they want to do business with me again.  Grin

The only issue I have with my credit union, they turn my card off at the first out of state transaction. Try being 400 miles from home on a Sunday morning on the Large Lady and the card won't work at the pump. Always carry some cash, don't ask.

It's funny, the problem with USAA for bill pay is that they're TOO good..

See, even with bill pay, I would maintain my check book, with debits made for each bill paid on the spot.

I wouldn't rely on them if they were showing money that would disappear any time, I rely on my checkbook.  Although I log on and check everything from time to time.

Fortunately, I haven't been remotely close to an overdraft since I was a First Lieutenant.  (no wife, no kids, and no money)   Grin    (no bounces for me since 18 with a $35 balance)

We had an awful lot of junior enlisted guys get in trouble overseas who relied on the 30 days it was taking for things to clear state side banks (back in the 80's).  I had to defend two courts martial for them, and they were unhappy to discover that a 30 day float was not a valid defense.  The crime is complete when you knowingly write, then negotiate a bad check.  Not when it bounces.  Of course, if your direct deposit milpay beats the check to the bank, no one ever knows.

You know, I think everyone is doing that now that there is so much fraud and ID theft (at least my credit unions, screw banks).  I don't travel much, and have to remember to call and tell them I'll be out of state, and then I'm good to go.  It used to be they'd only act on suspicious things, now it's out of state. And I can be in DC or MD in 20 minutes (though I'd rather go to Russia).

I set up a card with no protections and a very small limit just so I can get home from wherever if I forget to mention to the CU I might cross the cheese curtain on such and such a date. I had to use it the last time I was in FL, even after telling the CU I would be there, to pay for an extra bag I flew back.

I use Wells Fargo debit cards at gas pumps - travelling cross country, never had them decline the pymnt.  I watch my accounts every day and spot fraud immediately.  It's happened  several times now and they covered it every time.  Once someone had sold my numbers in Europe and there were several charges.  No problem for me except I had to replace the account for some regular debits on it.  I have five accnts at WF and more at another bank - never keep much money in the vulnerable accnts but do online transfers to them from a main accnt when needed.

Clark Howard is always saying to stay away from the big banks.  Use small town banks and credit unions is his advise.

My primary CC has been with BoA for 42 years, I have begun my search for a new one.  Have had an account with Navy Federal since the early 80's, leaning towards them.  Now I have to watch WF to see what they do, if they get stupid I'll take my mortgages and checking elsewhere.

Here's my last experience with a Bank.  I have a card only with one, and notify them I am going overseas in the military, and I only have a general APO address now, so here's what I want:  there's no charges now, so stop sending anything to the old address, and wait for me to notify them of my new address.  I get overseas, and they send a new card to the old address, and the new tenants (whoever they are) promptly run up a balance on my new card.  I send the Bank my new address overseas, and then they bill me for all the fraudulent charges.  I contest them and win, after a lot of long distance from Turkey.

They send me a new card, but you can't use a card almost anywhere in Turkey, so I don't use it.  About a year later, I end up TDY in Sigonella Sicily, enroute to Comiso AS Sicily, but no one from Comiso comes to get me so I have to find a place to sleep.  An in transit Navy pilot and I find ourselves at the only hotel in that god forsaken place, and it's like $200 a night, and both of us doubt military finance will repay us a TDY expense that steep, so we decide to share a room to split expense, and I use my credit card.  I defend the court martial for a guy smoking weed while guarding the nuclear ground launch cruise missiles with an M16 in a warehouse at Comiso, and return to Turkey.

The hotel in Sigonella sends a nasty letter through Air Force channels to my command outraged that I used a cancelled credit card to pay the whole bill (the navy guy paid me his half in cash).  The Air Force is on the warpath on all the bad checks and credit going on overseas, and instead of defending guys for it, now I'm the one in front of warpath.  I get that straightened out, pay the hotel in a mailed check, and write the Bank asking why they cancelled my card, and why they didn't notify me of the cancellation, and asking for a new card account.  They write back they cancelled it because I wasn't using it, they're sorry I wasn't notified, and I can't have a new card because I've caused too many problem on my account.

Head explodes.  Never ever deal with banks.

Another part of this funny story is that the JAG at Comiso treats visiting defense counsel as bad as the accused, doesn't get me a room on base but a hotel downtown, and gives me a big Italian flatbed truck to drive around.  The truck is like nothing I've ever driven (or ever seen), but I manage to learn on the fly, except when I get downtown 25 miles away, the damn thing is too wide to get down many town streets, and I end up stuck, with a lot of crazy Sicilians yelling at me for holding up traffic.  An angry Carabinieri (Italian military policeman) with a slung machine gun joins in screaming at me in Italian (and my 3 years of Spanish in Jr Hi is almost no help) (Hola Isabel, como esta?).  No one speaks English.

I manage to back the truck carefully down a long crooked street (I'll have to pay for any damages), and still have no idea where the hotel is.  I park, and find it on foot, then go back and get the truck, staying off the narrow streets.  My room has one bare bulb hanging from the ceiling on frayed wiring, and the shower is ice cold, no matter how long you let it run (and reminiscent of prison cells in The Count of Monte Christo).  The hotel dining room is OK and has good food, but it is clear the locals don't love the Air Force because they know Russia has nuclear weapons targeting the area because of the Comiso nuke base (and I am flashing back to the Godfather movie, with all the dark eyes and black mustaches staring at me).  The next day back at base, I'm informed that it's not safe being off base at night, as all the locals are committed communists and hate the Air Force.  And I have to live out there for the next couple days.

It's not just a job, it's an adventure (wait, that's the Army).  Grin
