Sounds like user error to me, Yes this is very tragic. Our Van has seats that fol down into the floor also. I can not figure out how someone could get trapped in them, let alone trapped well enough to die from asphyxia.

While the recall was issued for 2011-2017 models, the Odyssey that the boy died in was a 2004 model.

We have a 2012 Odyssey, and received a recall notice last month.  We use the van for furniture delivery, so we've already taken the two rows of seats out and placed them in storage. I think it's some kind of clip that gets placed in the hooks to prevent the seat from coming out of the track.

I'm on an Odyssey forum, and there were quite a few comments from people that had been trying to buy vans within the affected years, and Honda would not sell them. The dealers were all instructed to quarantine them until a fix was made. Some people were able to talk the dealer into selling the vans with the seats completely removed. They were able to get a better deal on the vehicles with the intention of coming back once the recall was accomplished and reinstalling the seats.

Thanks for the headsup.

Now if Honda would do something about the VCM debacle....
