These 'free' email and social media services cost money to develop, host, and maintain, and someone has to foot the bill.  Nearly all the personal info they harvest is used for targeted marketing.  I don't have a problem with that, but if you do you do, don't use the services.  There are paid email services you can use, though your email will still get read by the other services you communicate with.  For the social media stuff you can set up accounts with basically a name, town, and email address to minimize exposure.

I'm more concerned about the government spying on me than companies on the net.  Having said that, I am wary of companies with political agendas, like Google.  There's enormous potential for election meddling.
