Sad day.  He came and visited our unit in Iraq in '03.  I was with 1st Bn, 4th Marines (Engineer Platoon Commander for the infantry battalion).

He got done talking (very funny, btw) and started doing autographs and taking pitcures.  The pilots and escorts kept coming to him to tell him that it was time to go.  He kept telling them politely that he was not leaving until all the Marines got pics or autographs.  About the fourth or fifth time, he very aggressively told the Captain, "I told you, I'm not moving until every cursed Marine gets a picture or an autograph!"

I didn't meet him.  I and my fellow officers thought it best to stay out of the way to give the enlisted guys some good morale time.  Still, we all hung out close enough to witness the above scene unfold and died laughing at the captain getting put in his place.

Rest in peace, Gunny.

Thats too bad. I can't think of anyone that didn't like him. He was far too young.

i liked Gunny he seemed like a simple down to earth guy. his roles in some movies were great and I really enjoyed a TV show he had a long time ago called Mail Call. I never read to heard anything negative about him which is out of the ordinary from Hollywood people although i do recall him saying something about being blackballed because he was conservative.

RIP Gunny

A sad day, indeed.
He was real, no one can deny that.
A friend in law enforcement met him at the S.H.O.T. show.

Really, who didn't watch "Full Metal Jacket" and nervously quiver at the sight of him marching towards a recruit for a full on, face to face butt chewing.   I pulled the following from Wikipedia, impressive indeed.  For those that don't know, Drill Instructors are a different breed.

Military career
U.S. Marine Corps
In 1961, at age 17, Ermey enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and went through recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in San Diego, California.[2] For his first few years, he served in the aviation support field before becoming a drill instructor in India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, where he was assigned from 1965 to 1967.[4]

Ermey then served in Marine Wing Support Group 17 at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, Japan.[2] In 1968, he was ordered to Vietnam with MWSG-17, and spent 14 months in country. The remainder of his service was on Okinawa where he was advanced to staff sergeant (E-6). He was medically discharged in 1972 because of several injuries incurred during his service.[5] On May 17, 2002, he received an honorary promotion to gunnery sergeant (E-7) by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James L. Jones.[6]

According to Gunny himself a whole lot of Hollywood did not like him and blackballed him from movies in the last few years.   Go figure.

OK, didn't know or think about that. Plus, I could care less about the Hollywood types. So, I guess that makes me like him more.

Very sad to hear it, he was the same off-camera as he was in front of it, with a twinkle in his eye and a great sense of humor. I had the pleasure of having lunch him and 3 other "retired" Marines when I worked for Bombardier (Johnson/Evinrude outboard division) around 15 years ago. The group was doing a fund raising/publicity event to raise awareness and consideration for hiring older vets. They were doing a trip down the Mississippi River from MN or WI (can't remember) all the way down to the Gulf. Bombardier was supplying Zodiak boats & outboards as sponsorship. They set up a luncheon at Evinrude/Johnson hdq/factory as a PR op and had it in the conference room for about 20 people-the group of four Marines, around a half dozen front office execs from Bombardier, and held a lottery for the mfr. group to include one person from each group, i.e. machining, maintenance, assembly, etc. to round out the group. I was the luck winner from maintenance. With tables in a circle, we had an hour for an informal lunch of swapping jokes, asking questions, and generally eating with our hands and talking with our mouths full. RIP Gunny, you were one of the best  Cry

I shot next to him at Camp Perry. He was the same guy you see on TV. A bit toned down but the same guy.

He seemed to be a man proud of his background, respectful to others, and sure of his principles.
I'll just bet that he swore like a heathen when the camera went to "off" and was a funny one to boot.
Very well, take your place at the table and keep the conversation lively. angel                            Rest easy; thank you for your presence amongst us.
