Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

Happy Birthday, Wayne. I very much regret not being able to be there with you to help celebrate this major milestone in the life of such a remarkable person. The number of years represented here are indeed significant, but that isn’t the main item being recognized. As important as the length of one’s life is, the value of that life is the real issue to be noted.

I am honored to have known you for several of those years, starting in Paducah, Kentucky, at the first InZane I attended. I’ve known you mostly through this board and the posts you’ve made over the years. Over that time, I’ve come to think about your contributions both here in our ‘community’ and throughout a much larger sphere.

No one thing comes to mind that clearly illustrates how I’ve come to regard you. However, the stitching together of tid-bits of information, facts about yourself you’ve shared with us, the reading of your words, the meanings of your points, and the way you’ve always conducted yourself… all have combined to produce a portrait of a life well-lived, and a person well-worth knowing.

You are a peaceful, productive member of society, who causes no problems and threatens no one, and who has pulled his own weight and then some for four score and ten years. You’ve served our nation in the military in time of war, your local community through decades of holding public office as well as volunteer work, your faith through membership and active church participation, and humanity through your good job of parenting, loyalty and devotion to family, fidelity to honor, but most of all to this humble admirer, through the example of quality living to anyone who bothers to observe.

All of us have looked to ‘examples’, to role-models, to have a glimpse of proper conduct so we can learn from the visible evidence of actions and outcomes. None of us are born with knowledge of how to survive in life, and certainly none of us instinctively ‘do the right thing’ automatically. An indispensable part of maturing in life is gained through observation and the incorporating of lessons witnessed into our own persona. You did so as you were coming up, and many of us have done so by observing you.

As you all celebrate the passing of ninety years of life this day, know that many of us are also celebrating our own good fortune in having had a role-model such as you… and for the luckiest of those among us, the friendship of such a good person… I hope it is a good one, my friend!

Happy Birthday young man!  Thanks for the reminiscences, yarns, humor and wisdom you've shared.  I'll remember some of your old thumper stories like riding at night sans headlight, and your Korea stories like the chow hound!  I have also enjoyed reading your thoughtful and well written letters to the editor of your local rag.  Keep up the good fight!   cooldude

As Bruce stated I will also not be in attendance.  Cry But on the occasion of your 90th year on this orb I will say-Well Done SIR. Quite Happy to count you as a Friend. I still recall when da prez and Tail Gate Tommy and myself were on our way to I-16 you came out to the truck stop and had iced tea with these gypsy travelers.  2funny Would that I could be in Indiana but "things" transpired to keep that from happening.  Lips Sealed Again-Happy 90th.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Yes, please do. I have his personal email stashed somewhere but at the moment it's like trying to find the second sock in the dryer.  Wink  I wish him well and would loved to had made the trip but just can't leave things unattended at home. Tell him he now has 10 yrs. on me, which gives me a new target to shoot for. Hope to cross paths again one day down the road.

As they said well done Bruce.  If I ever need a well written tribute I will call on you to do so.  I too have enjoyed Wayne's stories and pictures over the years.  Happy Bday Wayne.
