A stray pit bull snuck up behind Judy while she was getting flowers and vegetables out of the garden. The dog seemed nice enough and then tried to bite her. She scared it off but it headed to the neighbors who were trying to get out of their van. The dog was attacking their vehicle and had them pinned after it killed their cat.

Judy had her .38 on her. When she heard the horn from the family trapped in the car she went to investigate. The dog ran at her again and she shot it multiple times. The last shot the dog Made it to her, went right for the gun and bit Judy hard on the right (shooting) hand. But she managed to get that last round in the dog while it was biting her hand and that put the beast down.

There was an elderly woman (friend) of ours out in her front yard. That’s why Judy went to check. She got between her friend and the dog just in case and then it lunged, she fired.

Bottom line. Dog is dead and no one else but the poor cat had to die.

We’re at the hospital getting it cleaned.

She saved everyone but paid a price.

Shoot the owners also. I know there are good pit bulls. I have heard more bad tho. A 12 year old was attacked a while ago. A man tried to help. Dog chewed up his arm. He was able to stab the dog. Police got there and shot the dog. Owners were irate. They were arrested as they had several warnings for loose dogs. Yes, plural.

Glad she put the sumbitch down fer good.  I go for a walk here in Southern Missouri I have a cane with a round wooden knob for the grip and either my .380 or my .40 with me. Again-PRAYERS up for Judy. RIDE SAFE.

Wow WOw WOW  Shocked I'm sure glad Judy got away from that Pitbull and went and got her gun to take care of that out of control dog. The situaltion could have really escalated had those neighbors gotten out of their car. ( Angry Personally, I don't trust the friendliest Pitbull.) Really sorry for the cat that met it's demise by that beast, very fortunitate that Judy got the last shot off while being bit on that hand. I wish her a Speedy recovery and keep it clean.

So glad Judy will be all right. She is one steady woman to do what she did.  Hope the owner picks up the tab for the dr. and then some

My daughter just had to put her 11yr old pit down due to sickness, that dog was the most lovable dog great with kids.  She now has a lab/pit mix puppy.

A person who abuses animals will more often than not find that animal damaged like the pit Judy put down. Owners who do that deserve a special place in hell.

Ok, a little follow up. First there was no problem with police, animal control or EMS. They were all on scene at the same time and many witnesses to attest to the facts. I asked for the gun back, and as soon as they ran the serial number the officer handed it back to me no problem.

Just a few minutes ago the owner came looking for his dog. Actually it was his room mates dog. He was angry about the dog being shot. He said it would never bite anyone. Oops, I guess he didn’t know the dog as well as he thought.

Judy is feeling much better thanks to a pain pill. I’m sure she’s in for some pain but it looks like it should heal just fine if we can keep it from getting infected.

Will the owner be paying for the hospital costs?

We have not spoken to him. Tomorrow the cops are supposed to come by to see if we want to press charges. I told Judy if the dog owner doesn't come here to talk to us before the police get here we're pressing charges

I know several pit owners, I don't trust them (their dogs).

They all swear their dogs get a bad reputation because of bla, bla, bla...... and that their dogs are angels but this crap happens way to often.    I honestly believe that all the genetic offensive/defensive aggressive behavior has NOT been bred out of the breed.     I love dogs, especially big dogs (Bowser, my own English Mastiff is 170 lbs of lap puppy) but pits are not welcome at my place.    My congrats to the little lady, she did good!   cooldude

If you work a deal with the owner, fine.

If it was me, I'd be real interested if this was a first offense, or whether there had been other past problems or history with this dog (or any other dog from that house).  That's always very relevant in dog cases.  A problem dog (or owner) can make the decision to go to court like doing the community a public service.

If charges are pressed and it goes to court, (assuming it goes your way) you should ask the prosecutor's assistance with/ or judge to order the defendant to pay her medicals (and any reasonable incidental out of pocket expenses too), as part of his sentence.  The state may get it's pound of flesh, but in cases like this, real justice should be to the victim, not the state.  You'll want to document expenses, and a couple of pictures of the hand.

Not to make a federal case out of it, but if I represented the dog owner, I wouldn't let him pay your expenses without a signed release of any further liability.  And if I represented you guys, I wouldn't want you signing any release until we were certain Judy's hand was going to be fine with no infection or permanent loss of function residual.  And if they were insisting on some kind of written agreement, I'd make them waive any future civil claim for the loss of their dog.

Here's some reading on FL victims rights.  https://www.google.com/search?q=victims+rights+in+FL&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b

PS: If my wife did this, I think I might go down to a shop and buy her a small marksmanship trophy or something commemorating the event.  Sure it might be kind of funny, but it would also be kind of nice for her.  Or give her one of these (you probably already have one laying around, with a star on it).

Guess what I found when I cleaned Judy's little snubby.  Yep, teeth marks, bull dog teeth marks.  I wish this didn't happen but since it did, these marks are a pretty darned cool badge of honor on her gun.

Add that to the dog owner's tab.

Plus, five shots of .38 Spl.

(I always thought the Soviet method of billing the surviving family members of all the one shot behind-the-ear executions they did for a single bullet, was an interesting piece of state terror high art (probably thought up by the master psycho Joe Stalin himself).  Reportedly, no one ever refused to pay the bill either.

Interesting what teeth did to an alloy frame.

Amazing that she did everything "right" from putting herself in harm's way protecting the neighbors to having the presence of mind to focus on the target the whole time. I would hope to be that cool under pressure.

I'm sure you wouldn't mind if the excitement level dropped a few notches up there. Sure glad Judy was thinking right and able to make good decisions in a high stress situation. Will be praying for both of you now.

That was one ugly garden gnome you had there.
