I understand it was something in the driveline, care to expand. I thought all that had been sorted out by our "Mandeville Mechanic"....Troutdude!  Curious minds...etc.   Wink

I talked to Dennis yesterday,  hope it was not Ali we were discussing. Sounded like he was into a hydrolock situation.

John,

I was on my way to Solo1's b-day party, when ALI had a boo-boo in Russellville, AL. I suspected it was the U-joint... Troutdude drove up in his truck pulling a trailer and hauled us back to Mandeville for diagnostics and repairs. It turns out it was the left rear wheel bearing... Dennis speculated it might have been caused by all the U-turns I have to make!   Grin

Anyway, he made the repair, then proceeded to pull the driveline apart starting with the U-joint, he then inspected the drive shaft, pinion cup, vent holes in the swing arm, and he even took a peek at the 'pumpkin'. Everything was as it should be, so now I'm mobile again and living large!

Regrettably, I missed the party in New Haven, but I did speak to Wayne during the party via telephone. I missed the ride I was looking forward to also... Oh well...

Following all of that, I decided to make the pre-Hill-Billy Ride scouting excursion this weekend, so we left Mandeville, LA, headed for Clinton, TN, to join up with the Kewl Kids there for the ride up to Pikeville, KY.

Funny thing... serious rain was in the forecast between those two spots, so I did a little detour... through Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and finally Tennessee... I'm still not in Clinton, however... Dennis mused... "Going west to get east, huh... Ain't that a Columbus thing...?"

I got up this morning at the motel in Mount Vernon, IL, and stepped out for my first look-see at the world... From above and just behind me a masculine voice inquired, "What are you up to, dude?" It was Mitcho! Troutdude has dubbed him 'Ninja Mitch' because he can appear from out of nowhere totally unannounced and completely unexpected... Just like he had this morning... Dennis had told him where I was, so he just rode over from his Home #1 in Effingham, IL, and surprised me!!! Yep, I got 'Ninja-fied'!

Well, Mitch still has his normal/main residence in IL, but he's bought another house in TN, that he and Laura plan to move to later... I ended-up following him to his Home #2 near Crossville, TN, and that's where I am tonight... Maybe Clinton tomorrow, but now rain is being called for tomorrow, so who knows...? So far, the weather for Friday and the weekend still looks good, so we may wait and ride over Friday morning...

So, a very short story being told in a very lengthy fashion... All that to say we did have a problem, but that turned out to be a wheel bearing. It did present an opportunity to inspect the rest of the driveline, however, and peace of mind counts for a bunch! I'd ridden through some pretty nasty stuff recently, so it was mighty reassuring to learn all is well...

DDT

Bill-Jr,

I'd thought it was probably the U-joint, but it turned out to be a wheel bearing... In any event, you are correct: Troutdude did bail me out!

DDT

Gavin_Sons,

Dennis is now working on another Valk's engine... one of his own. He is fixing up one he recently purchased, and that has taxed his patience and tested his talents! He seems to have resolved the issues with that bike now, however, so life is returning to normal for all of us... ALI only had the left wheel bearing issue, and that's all better now...

OK, an easy fix. Wondering if he has ever done the left rear bearing mod on Ali, replacing the single row bearing with a double row. Pretty much does away with the left bearing ever going out again. Glad you're rolling again, I've been up that route from Mt. Vernon to Effingham. My daughter #2 works in Effingham, lives in Vandalia. Small world!

Was great talking to you Bruce on dad's birthday. A "large" time was had by all at the party. The Mayor of New Haven made a proclamation for dad. Also the well wishes were put up on the New Haven administration building sign in front. So Bruce if you ever find your way up to the NE corner of the Hoosier state give us a call. We can get together and swap lies and kick tires......Safe Travels.....

Curious ...... how many miles on the bearings ...... they were all replaced at 464000  ???

It turns out it was the left rear wheel bearing

Terry,

I won't attempt to do the math, but ALI now has 601K miles on her. We just spent the day on the road with the contingent from Clinton, TN, for the ride to Pikeville, KY... My thinker muscle is a bit weary just now, and I still have some partying to do... Please forgive me for not computing an answer for you... Hope to see you this summer! Any chance you might show-up at IZ in June?

John's math is correct at 137000!

That means, I most likely will never have to change mine out!  Grin

As for InZane ....... not going to happen. Sad
I do want to get in some significant riding though.  cooldude
