I will try to condense a long, boring story. (Possibly into a short, boring story ?) I think I'm a relatively happy person, maybe a little gruff, but generally good natured. (I might be delusional also) Anyway, yesterday I had a bad day. Started crappy and pretty much went downhill from there. Had to go in early for work, alarm set at 2:30. Once a month is inventory and this was the day. Usually takes me about 4 or 5 hours depending on circumstances. As I get into it I realize one of the cases sounded different. Usually this sound is due to fan motors going out or the coils icing up. Sure enough the case is running about 10* warm. So priorities dictate saving $3,000 of product vs. finishing the inventory. But the higher ups have dictated a 10am cutoff for downloading the financials to them. My next 2 workers don't come in till 7 and 8. Get my old ass in gear, pull all the product, de-ice the case, get the inventory done and sent. Sweat is dripping off my bald head. Some guys, many guys would call the refrigeration company to come do it. I've always prided myself that if it's something I can fix I will. Their rate is $65 and hour to the company and sadly mine is only $22. By this time it's 8:30 and I'm just about to get the product back in the case. My immediate boss walks by and sees the empty case and responds "are you guys going to delete pork sales today ?" I was stunned and pissed at the same time. I just looked at him dumbfounded for a minute and the responded that the case was out and I've been busting ass since 4am getting it back up. I turn away and walk as I can hear him trying to dig himself out. I was too pissed to listen. And herein lies my question. You would think by the age of 60 I would have grown to the point of not letting others rain on my parade ? I might have grown some. There was probably a time I might have responded with an "F U". But, I was pissed most of the rest of the day. All because of another's ignorance. Which got me thinking today about my character. I let too many others bother me. Example, a couple days ago a car cut me off switching lanes. Luckily my 60 year old cat-like reflexes saved my ass and all was alright. But, I was pissed. I stayed behind them thinking the driver would finally see me and acknowledged they screwed up. But it was a couple of frail old ladies with a handicap license oblivious to the world. After I cooled down, I go around them and just shake my head, but I think they still had no understanding. Now granted this didn't get to me all day like the other experience, but clearly I let someone rain on my parade again. I'm afraid my personal growth has a ways to go. To follow up on the fun yesterday, my district supervisor called to chew me out about my hitting my budgeted profit. Even though I was 3rd best out of 56. His statement was, "yeah, but you are a big player" I wonder if it's ever enough ? Then the topper of the day ended with confirmation that my Mother in law has breast cancer. My daughter's MS medicine went from $300 a month to $1500 overnight. Like I say, my personal growth has a ways to go.

Hey, you needed to vent and you did that. I too had a bad day yesterday and had to apologize to someone here today. Things happen and venting helps. Hope your days get better.

I had a personal growth once.
I went to a doctor and had it removed.
(Sorry, I keep trying to think of something comforting and insightful to add but keep falling short, so will just leave it at that...)

First, there are things you can control (or at least influence), and things you can't.
Put your anger and energy into the former.
Try to convert anger energy into focused intelligence energy (like telling bosses all the facts supporting your (or the store's) situation in a cool, calm and intelligent manner. You're the top man in your department, you should know more about it than bean-counters, every time. Lay it out for them like they are ignorant children, but with respect. They hate it, but it's hard to argue with. As long as they know you are pulling for the team the best you can, and are pretty indispensable, it's hard to fire or discipline you. I had a lot of this in my working life too.
When things stack up, try your best to compartmentalize them. Each problem (hopefully in the correct priority order) is always easier do deal with than all of them at one time. Sometimes, it was very helpful for me to simply take few minutes to write myself out a list with a few comments of things to remember/or not forget for each. It made me focus, it made me prioritize, and it made me calm down. I've got the list in my pocket now under control, and I don't need to let my mind explode rolling over all this crap like I'll forget something.
I've been cut off and nearly run over or off the road so many times, I've got pretty good at letting it go as quick as I can. I've also got pretty good at finding open spaces to ride in, and staying in them, even if I have to go slow for awhile. If you stay away from them, it's hard for them to get you. This is mostly in urban traffic, but it can be anywhere.
Sorry for your crappy day. Today was the very first time my only new car ('03 Dodge, with just over 30K) would turn over hard, but not start (it usually starts in a half second). Man that pissed me off (WTF?). Starting fluid for the lawn equipment worked on my car. It ran fine for all my errands, so what the heck was the problem? It's on my list.

Thanks, Randy I think you hit the nail on the head, I needed to vent. Normally I would vent to Brenda, buts she's pretty shook up about her Mom. Didn't seem right unloading my trivial crap on her. Everything will work out. I do think I need to work on not letting dumbasses bother me though. Jess, thanks. It's all good. (well except for that Donald part)

If you ever feel your not getting enough abuse at work, just remember we're always here for you and happy to dish it out. That's what friends are for.
Seriously, my philosophy is "it could be worse". That's my standard response when asked, "How's it going?", and I honestly believe that. No matter how bad it gets, it could be worse. Sorry about your MIL, daughter's MS and increased cost of medicine. Hang in there dude.
PS: The good news is Trump has the Korean war all but over. MAGA!

I don't vent as often as I used to,but venting is good once and a while. It keeps me from throwing large wrenches at people who do stupid things to my little fleet.

Rob,
Personal growth? FWIW, I think you've already done all the major leg-work... maybe a few details and fine-points to work on, but... you're doing just fine, as near as I can tell, so just plug away like you have been doing. As far as venting goes, you can always send me a PM and let 'er rip. Anything, anytime. I probably can't do any better than you at identifying a solution, but I can listen and offer no criticism or scolding...
All of us on here disagree with each other about some things... and some things more than others. However, we are all brothers and sisters, and any of us would try to help if called upon... Probably a good idea to leave The Donald out of it, though...

2 sayings come to mind; you can't teach an old dog new tricks and a leopard wont change his spots. at some point you have to stop even trying on each. you are who you are at this stage of the game, just be yourself and let others deal with it, you've earned it.

You did ok Meat,
Just one question,
Isnt there a hot line on the intercom or a cell # you could call in the future to let management know what is fubar when you find it?
Yeah wake them up for pete's sake !
Who cares if it costs em money? Tell em if you think you can fix it and start doing it if that is your plan.
Best regards to Brenda and healing for your daughter

Management coming in at 4am ? Sacriledge Things are ok. Wizzard was right, I just needed to vent. I'm sure we've all worked with good leaders and some not so good. One thing I've learned in my career is everybody is motivated in different ways and deeds. I'm of the school that I really don't need or want my bosses telling me I did or am doing a good job all the time. But, I am certainly not motivated by smartass comments after busting my ass for 5 hours. This isn't the first time. I should have been ready for it. My bad. Thank you, see you soon.
