I suppose that if someone has millions then $1,100 is crumbs.

For most of us though $1,100 would be a nice little windfall.

I find all this talk about refunds (with or without recent tax changes) a bit confusing.

How much tax you have withheld for state and fed G's taxes from your wages has a lot to do with your W4 withholding document (and the filing status you chose).  To me, only an idiot would give any G an interest free loan, and only an idiot needs the G's help in saving their own money.  I spent my whole life underpaying taxes on purpose (though trying to avoid penalties for excess underpayment) so I didn't get refunds very often (and none for many years).

Given these variables of tax withholding and filing status, the occasional reports of higher refunds seems pretty nebulous.

Higher taxes is ALWAYS bad, and lower taxes is ALWAYS good, regardless of what kind of refund you may get.

It is interesting to me, that I underpay my State by about half (percentage-wise) of what I underpay the Fed, but I never get a penalty from the Fed, and my VA penalty is about 10 bux.  I'm not changing anything.

Another way to look at is, all G's are like greedy children, the more they get the more they spend.  So everyone should chip in and do their part and underpay their taxes forever (underpay, not cheat).  Patriotism for Country has nothing to do with trying to reign in fiscal irresponsibility of Government.

If we citizens ran our finances like our G's run theirs, we would all be doing time behind bars.

LBJ is the guy who decided the collective Federal Social Security account should just be rolled into federal spending.  There is apparently a small box somewhere in DC, with an IOU with an unbelievable number on it.  The G claims that it just owes money to itself, but they lie.  That was OUR money, not theirs.

Personally, being self-employed most all of my life, refunds are but a topic of conversation regarding taxation. I once, for some unknown reason, received a state refund check of $3.14. (What did THAT cost to process?) I framed it for a few years. Then, during Obama, got so POed that I took it out of the frame and cashed it. Was sent a letter from the bank about two weeks later that the check came back NSF and that I owed them that amount. (In total candor, the check did say "void in ninety days". Like anything else out of our "G".  It is a constant fight to keep what is ours in the first place.

Idiot I am!  I do it just for the reasons that bother you so much. I would pay to much to anybody than owe anyone a dime!  But that's just me.

actually its not our money it is the federal reserves money which is lent to us to exchange services.
if congress did away with the private corp FR and issued money as required by the constitution then it would be the people's money due to the people are in charge of congress.  kennedy issued an executive order to do away with FR and put the money making back into congress hands. he was then killed and first thing lbj did on airforce one after it was confirmed that JFK was dead, lbj did away with that EO.

My fed withholding in my twice monthly paychecks amounts to a nice chunk of change at the end of the year.  The corporate tax cuts also increased our bonus which was paid out beginning of this month.

Also, as per my tax guy, even though I still live in the highest taxed county in America, I can still write off more than 2/3 of my property taxes.  I am only losing about $1,000 in refund, but I''m still ahead in my paychecks and the bonus.

Yay Trump!!!!!!

Hey OSS, are stiffing your administrative assistant and not taking out less in her federal withholding when you pay her?   Grin   Cheesy

Apparently I am an idiot as well. I would rather get $1000 back at the end of the year than owe $1000. And had I left that $1000 in the bank in my savings account all year that would have netted me under $5?

Guess I am alright being an idiot.

Same thing here in California.

The 'Tax reform' was carefully designed to screw up people who lives in Blue states, while giving (for a short time frame i.e. 4 years) some cents to 'Trumpland'.

Millionaires on the other hand have it good, and forever.

Refund? Is that like a helmet? You guyz are are teaching me all sorts of new things about which I know nothing.but

I pay the G every quarter, both state and fed. At the end of the fiscal year I get to write another check to both of the theives. This year I received $35 from the state and $57 from the fed. That filled my truck one time, but I didn't have to send in that final check. Now if someone could fix the other legal extortionists (insurance), I might actually be able to earn a living.

I want to apologize for calling folks overpaying taxes idiots.

I tried hard for many years to never do it, and think underpaying may make the G's a tiny bit more conservative with spending (though maybe that's impossible).  No G ever gave me an interest free loan, why should I give them one?

Anyway, just because someone doesn't agree with me doesn't make them an idiot.  Sorry.
