Only thing good about what they did was the Mother holding child didn't run back to the car. She walked, keeping her body sort of facing the cats. That's the only good thing I saw. running from a cat causes them to want to chase/tackle you.
Seen lots of pic's and few in person of idiots wanting to get close to critters that could/want to eat them or stomp them in the ground.
They were lucky.

I saw another incident in India this week where another twit tried to take a selfie with a bear. It too whupped him but other people beat it and stoned the bear to death,

As brave as I get is swatting yellow jackets. They fly so erratically though, it's hard to connect. On the other hand, they seem to have little trouble connecting. The pricks. What the hell are you looking at, puny human? Me and a thousand of my best friends live here. Jihadists of the animal kingdom.

I think I saw a puddycat. Unbelievable and with toddler in arm. Those cats are probably well fed. They herded the humans back to their auto where the humans belong. I wonder if this is a protective response in do not mess with us and/or the cats have their young close by. This happens in the North American forest more than most folks are aware of.

If the cats wanted to really kill and eat them the family wouldn't have even seen it coming.

Awwww, pet the nice kitty cat. Once on a group ride, I was following a guy who dipped his toe (instead of the right throttle hand) to point out a giant road kill skunk laying tall (and mangled) in the road. His aim was off (target fixation?), and he got under it and launched it (spinning fluids) out ahead of his bike. Moments later, he he was choking and holding his leg out into the breeze (presumably to cut down on the smell to his own nose). This was possibly the funniest thing I ever saw on a motorcycle (or anywhere really). I had tears flowing from laughter and had to pull off to the side to compose myself. A half hour later at our lunch stop, he was informed he was not welcome in the restaurant, and his food was brought to him outside at a picnic table (on the other side of the parking lot). As we got ready to leave after lunch he was heard to say..... I thought it was a cat. And the rolling laughter started all over again.

Cheetahs are a bit......different The prey sees them.......runs....... cheeta trips it from behind. The fall does most of the damage ANY other cat that I know of........yeah. One would be dead before they hit the ground IMHO Dan
