Dear Friends
Last week Youtube released their own new series, Cobra Kai.
People may remember that back in the 80's there was this movie (Karate Kid) that was pretty successful. Cobra Kai resumes the story, 30 years later... but from the perspective of Johnny Lawrence (the 'bad guy' from the original movie).
I was a bit skeptical of it, but decided to watch and judge by myself... and oh, boy! It delivers!
For a trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCwwxNbtK6YWhile in its junior/sophomore year, Johnny was 'the man': nice car, motorcycles, karate champion and dating the most beautiful girl in the school.
Now cut to 30 years later and he is for all measures, a looser. Working shitty jobs as a handyman and whose high point in his day is the next bottle of Coors.
Meanwhile, Daniel Larusso became a successful businessman, respected, big house, beautiful wife and family. The full package.
All that starts to change when Johnny saves the ass of a teenager that is his neighbor that was being beaten by the local bullies (Mr Miyagi anyone?).
By insistence of his neighbor (a latino immigrant!), he decides to open a new Cobra Kai karate dojo and the story develops from this premise.
Cobra Kai has pretty nice writing, direction and it is a fresh retake on this characters from 80's (not to mention the many references to the original movie and the 80's pop culture).
The only con is that this is available only on Youtube Red and requires to subscribe for 1 month to be able to watch it (it is fine, you can cancel your subscription once you are done).
Enough spoilers, just go and watch the series.
