I was at a gas station today and a winger came in with loud music then a commercial on the radio.  He left it on until he finally turned off his bike.
I thought----- In what world does someone think anyone else wants to hear his annoying radio blaring.

Noise pollution goes across so many areas these days that it's virtually impossible to cover it all.

The blare-or rarely considers what the blare-ee likes or does not like in the quest of his/her's music, musak, or wanting more info on greasy kid stuff.  Heck, "boom cars" that are everywhere (even in our sticks), don't actually have any music playing that I can discern as actual music, but they sure do have a bunch of boom.

Any help?  I guess my answer is: "Anywhere you find it."

I agree. Speakers in the helmet are so much less intrusive to others!

Yes.

It took me a while to realize how hypocritical I was being, I had speakers on my Valk and would happily listen to my tunes load and proud.

One day I was grousing to the spousal unit about the inconsiderate SOB sharing his thump thump "music" at a light next to us when she pointed out my hypocrisy. It hit me in a moment of lucidity, and I quickly removed the speakers and switched to in helmet speakers instead.

Are there varying laws from state to state about what one can or can't wear in your ears/helmet?
Aren't there some on the books that don't allow anything?

In general, yes.

However, if it's Vivaldi's Four Seasons playing, it's OK. (this doesn't happen much)

If it's rap music, it makes me homicidal upset.

It's not a race thing, it's a music thing  (one is music, the other is not music).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRxofEmo3HA

Whatever I'm playing, I lower the volume at all stops.  (Not that my pure stock radio and speakers can even get close to competing with the thumpers, or even modern stock car/bike stereo.)

Do unto others....

I can't speak to all 50 states, but in general, helmet speakers are OK, and ear buds are not (though one might be legal).  Ear plugs however are legal everywhere (to stop noise, not to add noise).

Yes, I don't appreciate being forced to listen to another vehicle's speaker noise.   I also won't ride close to loud pipes/exhaust.   Have already lost most of my upper range hearing.  Not interested in losing any more of what I have left.

loud music does not bother me as long as my LOUD music or other decent music.  I am less well rounded as most and enjoy a select group of songs either country or 80s rocknroll for the most part.

Just glad at work the 24 year old has headphones in since his idea of music is crapola..

I do turn my I/S speakers down a tad if in town but do not consider it too loud with so-so stock Honda OEM speakers is mediocre at best in terms of clarity and loudness.

Doesn't bother me as much as some fool thinking I need to hear his cell phone conversation in a restaurant! Some people just can't put the phone down no matter where they are.

It is funny, I took Brian Jr. for a ride to Cabelas on Saturday (Bought 2 new guns using the gift certs they gave me for signing Kali up as an NRA life member. Woot!)  in his grandpa's 'vette (Hey, he parked it in my garage, and asked me to make sure it didn't sit undriven for too long!) I took the roof off, and was cranking Sabaton really loud, but whenever we came to a stop I'd turn it down.

(If you're not familiar with Sabaton, let me elucidate you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U9lVjZg-Kg )

Brian Jr. asked why I kept turning it down sometimes, and I explained that not everyone appreciates quality music like Sabaton, so it's just polite to not share when other people would be forced to listen to it, like at a stop sign.

I don't think he initially got it.

But later on we DID end up next to someone sharing their (once again) boom boom thump thump "music" with us, and he said he understood now why I kept turning ours down to be considerate to others.

(Luckily I had some bagpipe music ready to go... The pipes cut right through that boom boom crap!)

When I was a kid I was all about putting big home cabinet speakers in the back seat of my car and driving around in the summer with the windows down and Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly or similar music blaring from an 8 track tape. I outgrew that. And, I drive cages with AC now.

I still like loud rock and blues occasionally, but I usually enjoy it with the windows up or just in my helmet. When I want that kind of sound I want to hear the guitar, hear the bass, hear the details of the music. I can't get that from my fairing speakers because of the wind blast and wouldn't subject others to it at a stop.

Some years back I knew a guy here locally that had a rather unique way of handling loud speakers at a stop light. He had some powerful spkrs. mounted on his two rear side windows facing out, the controls on the dash let him choose which side would play. If someone pulled up and was blowing his ears out, he'd roll down that window and using a mic would ask them to turn it down. He often got lip service so he then would follow with Beethoven's Fifth, the power of those speakers would liquefy your bones and part your hair. I followed him once out of curiosity just to watch, the reaction was hilarious....followed by turning down the noise.

Another incident happened when a guy I was riding with on the Valk nicely asked a kid to turn down his deafening noise at a light. The kid flipped him off so my friend got off his bike, walked over and yanked the keys out and tossed them to the curb a good 30ft. away, then got back on his bike without saying a word. The light went green and we moved on, at the next light a squad pulled up next to us, the two cops inside were laughing so hard they had tears. They had watched the entire thing, thought it was hilarious, then drove off.

As for my loud tolerance....it's quite low, apparently due to some unusual hearing. I can hear the thermostat click on/off from our bedroom 40ft. away. I have difficulty in church because they constantly have the sound cranked up and it literally hurts my ears. My wife and I can't watch TV together, she has it too loud for my comfort so when I go to another room to watch I have to shut the door or her TV overrides mine. Last week I surprised my neighbor across the street. We were chatting and I suddenly took off running toward the house...said I'd be right back, Rita's calling me. When I returned, it was to a rather bewildered young man, he had heard nothing. When she's on the phone I have to leave the room, otherwise it's not a private conversation....I usually can hear both sides of it from across the room. Kinda bothers me at times, must be my big ears.  Grin

I'm 67 urs old and in general I don't like loud music.   However, if I pull up next to a loud speaker car in traffic I don't care for it but if that is what the guy likes its ok to me as I don't have to listen to it very long.   What does bother me is when I have my young grandkids with me and the loud music is full of curse words.....F__k this and F___k that and God D___m this and God_dam that.   I find that very offensive.

Was recently at the car wash in my home town in the drying area along with several families with small kids and my 7 yr old grandson.   Also there was a guy about 24 or 25 with a 5 yr old daughter and he was playing VERY loud music that was sending shock waves through my chest.  the songs playing were full of F bombs and Sh__t bombs and a story of his ho going down on him.    I politely asked him to either turn the music down or change to a not so offensive song.  He basically told me to stick it and that his daughter was used to it.    GEEEEEZ.     Poor little girl don't stand a chance.    Being the old man I am I called the local police who got there quick and shut him down and made him leave.   I'm probably gonna get some backlash from you guys but seems there is no respect for others anymore.

For a long time, I had a guy went to work at 4AM driving around my corner lot with the booming and thumping going so loud it would wake me up, with all my windows closed (maybe his too).  I had to get up at 4:30, but the early alarm was not appreciated by me (and I bet many others).

So I finally found his car back in the neighborhood behind me, and left a nicely printered note on it.  I asked him to be more considerate of his neighbors at 4AM.  I recited the entire County noise ordinance (and times)(and penalties).  I told him he had a nice car (citing the year, make, model, color, plate number and house address) and said I would hate to have to call the PD on him for his 4AM (on the dot) neighborhood rides.  I said it was good to know where he and his car lived, and it would be too bad if something bad happened to his car.  I said I was one of his neighbors..... guess which one?

Things improved right away.

Don't sh!t where you eat.

I sincerely appreciate you being that considerate.    I ride with some friends who think the rest of the world has the same appreciation/love of their choice of speaker noise as they do.    I am not impressed with some of their choices and wish they would turn it down.   crazy2

I’m getting to the point of being that old guy who yells at kids to get off his lawn! I happen to live in motorcycle heaven and get hundreds of bikes a day past the farm. Most have loud music and or loud pipes. And everyone thinks theirs is the best. Well, I’m here to tell ya none of the animals are impressed in your music or your bikes pipes. Why a person would come to God’s country and blast through it with noise is beyond me. You just can’t take in the smells, sounds or scenery that way. Yes.  I don’t see why one has to inject their style of music on everyone within fifty yards of them.  I piped radio and my play list into my helmet either by wires or Bluetooth.

Winger...hmm... I wonder if it's an old-age deafness thing.  My FIL lives with us, and when he arrives home in his car we can hear his talk radio from inside the house while he listens to the end of the segment (with his windows rolled up).  When I arrive home when he is home alone, the TV is blaring until I unlock the door, when it drops to a reasonable level.  He doesn't wear his hearing aids because he "doesn't need them".

Growing up on an island in MI, a short distance from the yacht club, I crewed on many different sailboats on Sunday morning races on Lake Erie (a young guy with skills, willing to work hard could sail every Sunday).

By far, most of my Sundays were spent crewing an old Hinckley 38 with a good group of fellows and a great owner who didn't mind a few of us young fellows having a beer or a shot now and then.  The boat was old and wood and not as fast as many of the modern racing machines, but it was beautifully kept up and a joy to sail.

As you may know, the start of sailing races is across a narrow line between an anchored race boat and buoy, with 10 and 5 minute carbide cannon shots, and the boats all jockey for position, tacking back and forth, with the plan to hit the line under full sail and speed just as the start gun goes off (similar to Canadian rules football).  There were many collisions, and protests, and fist shaking in these crowded starts (much worse in high winds), and shouts of Starboard Tack and Abaft the Beam (thus claiming right of way over the guy about to hit you).

Our owner had a great sense of humor, so at every start, we all (7) donned WWI dough-boy steel helmets, held up shots of Drambuie (830AM), and he shoved in an 8track of blaring bagpipe music making it hard for everyone close-by to hear shouted commands to crew at the frantic starts.

A lot of the other boat owners didn't like it, but it was tough titty (and not against the rules).

Who wouldn't want to crew for this guy (at 14-16yo)??  Grin

Something like this:

We didn't win many races (except we were best in heavy winds), but no one had more fun.

I have a 460 powered F-250 global warmer.
All I do is quietly pull up and aim the exhaust remove the oxygen from the thumper.
That way we both get headaches.
My Valk makes all the helmet music we need.
Ted Nugent, Mountain, Lynyrd Skynyrd, all need to be played at 11.

Well, the idea in sailing is not to fall off the boat.  In fact, a universal sailing race rule is you finish with all the guys you started with, or are disqualified.  There were a couple asshole Capt Bligh skippers down at the club, who screamed and yelled and humiliated their (young) crew so badly, that a few jumped off their boats just before the finish line (disqualifying them from a win or point finish).

You can't grow up on an island and not be a swimmer.  I had my mile swim in Boy Scouts.

I live right near the High School student parking lot. While I am most usually functioning before 0730  0800 there Are days I like to relax a bit. Some but by No means All the students want to serenade me with thump thump boom boom. Talking to the local L E Os tames it down fer a week or so. I also have a young person of the male persuasion on my block that Thinks-incorrectly-that I want my windows rattled by his car stereo. He is of course WRONGWRONGWRONG on that assumption. The L E Os succeeded in gitting his attention cuz I just KNOW he did NOT wanna see my volume control device.  Evil Up near my S I L office in Island Lake Il. they git a LOT of V-twinky riders that believe-incorrectly of course-that EVERYONE likes their noise. Also a Lot of the water craft on the Fox river there think the same. I'm hard of hearing my pipes aren't obnoxiously loud BUT I've heard stereos with me runnin 70 M P H that hurt my ears. THAT'S too cursed loud. RIDE SAFE.
