Good information re Cast Iron tub removal

I needed to remove a cast iron tub in the bathroom.  I really was dreading the task.  I was thinking backache and mashed fingers etc. etc.  A friend called and asked what I was up to and I told him.  He said that he had heard that one could remove it with a large sledge hammer, that they would break.  They will.   But be very careful as I had one piece hit me in my shin and bled for a bit but survived.  Long pants would have helped but be sure you wear eye protection.  I threw the whole tub out the bathroom window piece by piece.

Yes that is the easiest way....have removed several like that.

Works great, my wife was tired of the bathroom and I came home one day to the bathroom walls with holes in them and the debris in the tub and a glaring and sweating wife. I guess it was time to remodel the bathroom  Finished the walls and the sledge worked easily on the tub.

I took out 2 cast iron tubs when I worked in long term healthcare. They shatter almost like glass. I used a cheap painters tarp to cover the tub as I used a sledgehammer to hit it through the tarp. Learned on the first one on the second hit when I took a peace of shrapnel to the face.

Yeah BUT it do save old muscles from damage by lifting too durned much. OR if you can find them AND git them to work couple of high school young men and-naw-probably screw up the walls on da way out!  RIDE SAFE.

Terry, I can assume Iris wasn't using the tub at the time? When I was stationed in northern Maine in the early 60's, we had a neighbor that removed an old claw foot tub. He set it up in his garage, not sure how he got it to work but he used it in making home brew. Maybe used it for storage 'cuz he never seemed to run out. Told me "I didn't bother to clean it none, figured the juice would do it for me."  He had it set up on a platform about 2' off the floor, installed a faucet of sorts on the outside below the drain so if he wanted some "juice" as he called it, just turn on the faucet. I saw the tub when it was empty once, sure was clean, not sure I would have sipped any of the product.
