So we decided to go to the other mountain near Tucson. We had already done Kitt Peak observatory and started planning a trip to Mt Lemmon, which is a little north and a little east of Tucson. I was looking for the closest way which would put us at about 300 miles for the day...
the problem was that we ran out of road, still had fun and if I would have had an appropriate solution, we would have made it.

It actually didnt look too bad...if I was solo and with at least one more bike I probably would have tried it. And we were standing next to a sign the said 50 miles to the next town, decision was easy when my wife said getting lost was fun. Turned around and will get there next weekend

The Mt Lemmon Hwy looks fun on Google Earth.

Apart from the enormous tar snakes  in a few places Angry

You'll like it. We did it with the SoCal and AZ guys a few years ago.

I lived in Tucson back in the 70's.  Separated at DMAFB.  One time I got a wild hair and drove up Mt Lemmon in my Plymouth Duster (slant 6, stick).  At the top, decided to head on North down the back way.  Wasn't long it turned into a 4WD road.  I banged that car, with my family onboard, over the rocks and stuff I had no business being there.  Used the downhill & gravity to get past impassable places for a car.  Was praying we didn't get stopped as there was no way to go back.  Lucked out and made it.

I'd say I learned a lesson but didn't really.  Did similar adventures offroading on old mining trails with an Olds Cutlass Sierra in the CO mtns 15 years later.  At least didn't have kids on board then.  These times got stopped because the car didn't have the guts to pull uphill on steep grades.  Almost burned up the tranny.

After that I got a Bronco which could handle it.
