Me thinks this one is running a cam....among other things. But an old flathead Ford with a blower....a sound you can't beat.  cooldude

One of the first cars I ever worked on with my father was 39 Chrysler Imperial with a flat six and suicide doors.

I love the 1939 Dodge Deluxe four door - would not mind having one.

John, the 12 cylinder motor work video was cool!

Something I don't get, I know it must be an 8cyl, it has 4 plugs in the head, but only 3 exhaust pipes coming out. Am I missing something???

Nope the only thing your missing is the center port covers the 2 center cylinders the outside ports cover 1 cylinder each the front and back ones to be exact  cooldude Did you notice the ports are in the block and not the heads.

That engine sounds healthy.

I grew up working on them.  A Flattie with a blower  is pretty neat and they are kinda meant for each other, a video with one would be nice. They seem to be making a huge come back.

My best friend in HS built a flathead Ford with his Dad for the 40 Ford coupe he had. His dad was a gear head from back in the day and had some old speed parts left over. That flathead had Jahns 8.5:1 pistons, was stroked , 3/4 cam, aluminum heads and twin Stromberg carbs with a set of homemade headers with Smitty mufflers. That thing just sounded cool.....nothing else sounds like a flathead.

Definitely running a cam.....and I think more than stock compression.  The flatheads were fun engines but they did have a tendency to crack the block between the exhaust valves when power was beefed up and they were ran hard.
We switched to a GMC straight 6 in our car at the dirt track.

Still poking around the old flaties, found some with the Ardun conversion heads that changed them to OHV motors. Here's some rather healthy sounding examples.

Here's a Stephens conversion, does the same thing as the Ardun.

You like the old 4-bangers, here's a Model A converted to OHV. Neat sounding motor.

While Packard was bringing out their V-12, Cadillac would announce they would be offering their own V-12 flattie, and they did. Only thing is they also would also secretly bring out this... count 'em.

Later made an OHV version of the sixteen for '39-'40
For a few years you could have your choice, V8, V12, V16

Re. the Packard V-12, my cousin back....waaaay back in my youth, had a friend he worked with that owned a bunch of early iron from the late 20's into the 30's. One was a big roadster type Packard he let my cousing borrow for the weekend. It had a V-12 flathead in it and ran so smooth and quiet you couldn't tell it was running until you got up close. Big, long, monster of a car or so it seemed to a little kid not yet in his teens, had the spares mounted on the fenders.

Art708, I agree, the Duntov cams were also a highly sought after item back in the day. As I recall, didn't he have a brother he worked with on some projects, doing some R&D with him? Not exactly yesterday so memory tends to become less reliable with time.  Wink
