I had a piece picked up by a local publication this month.  I believe the nucleus of this piece  started within this forum sometime back.  Funny how ideas start in odd formats, and then when time permits one can go back and refine the element.  But it helps me to put the initial thought in writing when it comes to me or it will be gone forever.

It is a bit dark though:

A well written piece.  My entire family was killed in a crash 25 years ago, I was the only survivor. Driving/riding past road side memorials is always tough

Maybe I'm dense, but what's the significance of the root-cellar-type door?

I took it as a metaphor for a passageway to the underworld. (But I might be dense also)

I believe you're right, at least that was my take on it. Re. Black-eyed Susans....on my way back to Ohio from the first InZane in Michigan, I stopped at a rest area and was drawn to a large field behind the building. It was solid gold/yellow from end to end....all Black-eyed Susans. Was almost overwhelming to the senses.

That's brutal, sorry to hear.

The roadside memorials have always caught my attention and cause my gut to tighten a bit passing; hence the inspiration for the creative piece.

As for the "rabbit hole" well, . . . .

Thanks, time cannot heal all wounds but the pain is lessened by the memories....
