Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.

Observances: Remembrance of American service members who have died in military service.

While enjoying this day away from most of our normal troubles, tribulations and tasks, take a minute and consider what some sacrificed so that we could live and enjoy the lives, liberties we have in this country.

They gave all so that we would be free.

The Korean War Memorial, among many, sums it up.  "Freedom is Not Free"

Many people wish each other a 'happy' Memorial day.  That works if you remember what the day is for.  Those who did not come back home .Servicemen and women from all of our wars.

4% of those in the Armed Services see combat. They suffer 90% of the casualties. As a veteran of the 'other' 96% , I have the deepest respect for combat veterans and a profound sense of loss for those who gave their lives for us.

A happy Memorial Day is due, in large part, because of those who wrote a 'blank check" as members of the Armed Forces, past and present;  Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast guard.

What is the difference between Memorial day and Veterans day? What is the feel of each day.  For us, remembrance day (veterans day) is a very somber day.  When in the military I had the honour of performing in the cenotaph guard many time for Remembrance Day Ceremonies. A painful but rewarding experience of stand on guard, head bowed with rifle in hand, giving one time to reflect on the sacrifices made by others.

Is that like your memorial day or veterans day?

Veteran's Day honors all that have honorably served.
Memorial Day honors those who have fallen while serving and protecting our freedom.

and here just now I see on local news about 1 hour away some deadbeats are stealing flowers on marked graves.  I hope they get put in jail for it and serve some time.  Why do something so trivial and foolish?  Complete lack of disrespect.  Angry

Rams said it right and his thoughts are also reflected and further explained by this Navy Seal.

Over this weekend my mind keeps flashing back to the annual Memorial Day Parade in my hometown of Midland, MI, that my Father would take us to year after year.    As I reflect now it must have been tough for my Father.  He was in the 8th Army Air Force from Jan 1941 into the occupation of Germany in 1945.  God only knows how many hundreds or thousands of comrades he knew that never came back.  My Father just never talked about this.

I wish we had the respect to honour both separately but, as it stands, we only have one day for both.

I really see little need for our Veterans Day. I served my 4 years in the Navy, I got as much or more than I gave. They fulfilled the contract as did I.

For us, I feel there is not enough emphasis on living, serving members of the armed forces. Our Remembrance Day is focused on WWI and WWII with little given to present members.... Sad

My daddy saw the war flying backwards as a tail gunner in a B-25 Mitchell in the Pacific, 13th Air Corp. I am sure he witnessed the demise of many of his comrades. He never talked about it. Salute to all the brave soul's who have given the ultimate sacrifice. God bless The United States of America......VN..67-68

While remembering and honoring those that gave all for our country and the liberties some of us hold so dear, I'd also like those who seem so willing to let our rights and freedoms be restricted or taken away, to think about what it took to get them.  After travelling by air recently, I'm appalled by what we allow ourselves to be subjected to in the name of security.  A false sense of security at that.

Thank you to all who have paid the ultimate price.

Here's why.  All gave some, some gave all.  Peace be with you brothers.
