There are so many bad " blind" drivers on the road in our town.  Eight years ago it was time to renew my license and I remembered struggling with the eye test so I went and got glasses. Well they were delayed and not going to me in my hands before my license expired so I renewed on line..

Fast forward eight years today is renewal again and I have the glasses, so off to the DMV without fear of the eye test.  Go in, no wait, step right up write the check and take the picture and BOOM new license, no eye test.

Hmmmmm

Before they had the machines for eye tests, I used to pass the wall charts with my best eye (only).  What I did was drop one arm covering the bad eye, then raise the other arm, but covered the same (bad) eye with the opposite hand.  They were looking right at me while I read and passed the chart test for each eye (except I passed both tests with the same  good better eye).  I did this several times, back in the day.

The next time I went in, they had the machines (which could not be cheated), so I pulled my glasses out and passed easily.

I generally used my glasses to drive anyway, but I just didn't want corrective lenses required on my driver's license if I didn't have to.

When I bought my new truck in MI last week, several outfits (dealer/bank) were impressed with the level of security on the VA driver's license.   I explained that after it was discovered that most of the 911 hijackers had had VA driver's licenses, VA DMV decided it was time to make them much harder to get (with top security features).  Funny how that works.

I'm glad VA already knows who I am, if I had to prove it for the first time, I'd have to bring in a pile of original documents (and my deceased father and grandfather).

Or just take the red pill.

When the topic of "bad" or "blind" drivers come up, glasses, or lack of them, usually is one of the things that are considered to contribute to the problem.
I don't believe they are a major issue. Important to read the signage on the roads, but maybe not as critical for general driving.

To see the real issue, look up the awareness test and take it.
Look up optical illusion sites and try some of those.

Some of these things that trigger illusions or have us not see things that are right in front of us are an everyday occurrence out on the roadways. Our minds can only process so much at one time. Most of this happens in split seconds and most times you don't even notice. Until the accident happens.

Kali recently got her learner's permit...

After my wife taking off work and pulling Kali out of school so she could go to the DPS (Texas version of DMV), they wouldn't issue her the license initially because the slash / on the date from the form the school had to fill out saying she was passing was written the wrong direction. \ instead of /.

So Kali had to go back to the school office the next school day, get them to fill the form out again but make sure they had their slash in the date going the right way, wife had to take MORE time off of work, Kali had to miss more school time to go back a second time to finally get it done.

(Yes, I used this situation as a teaching opportunity. I think the lesson made a big impression!)

I still squeak by without glasses at DMV, just barely,  but know better and use prescription glasses at night and prescription sunglasses during the day.

Now do not ask me to tell the difference between red and green since I am color blind - literally no joke.
