I’ve got 4 audiobooks loaded in my phone for the boring blast across AZ, NM, TX, OK. I thought I would look at some podcasts also. Last night I came across one called “What you missed in History  Class”. It was pretty interesting. I listened to one on the pirate Tom Every.

Did you get the audiobooks from your library, or a pay service?

And where do you go for podcasts?

Bob, the audiobooks I got thru my library for free. Someone here recommended the app Overdrive. It works good. The podcasts already had an icon on the iPhone Brenda got me. I don’t know if it’s just an Apple thing or not. I really enjoyed that history about the pirate though.  cooldude

What do you listen to, audiobook-wise?
I, myself, have never gotten into audiobooks, but I am a voracious reader.

I have only listened to one chapter of Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy. I downloaded 4 books for my ride. I used to read a lot when I was out to sea , not so much since then.

Some time ago, I worked many late night/early mornings in my upholstery shop. I bought quite a few audiobooks on eBay and would listen to them through the night. And they were mostly on cassette, tells you how long ago it was. Now it seems to be much easier and more variety.....It was really great, it takes your mind somewhere else and you're still able to work right along.

For me, reading has always been just to read.  When I read, I do nothing else.  I feel immersed in the story.  I do love the ability to download a book on my e-reader in seconds, rather than going to a book store.   And can read in a dark room with the backlight turned on.

I don't read anywhere near as much as I used to . When I do pick up a book, I really enjoy it.

When I rode the "Loneliest Highway" and "Extraterrestrial Highway" through Nevada I was listening to John Carpenter of Mars. Seemed quite fitting in that arid desolate landscape.

I've discovered that my reading retention is much less when I read something on a computer screen vs reading it on paper.

If I have to write a paper for something I always have to print a copy to do the final edit.

For some reason mistakes on paper stand out to me and are much easier to spot than on a computer screen.

Libraries are adapting to the electronic age.  If you like to listen to stories this is the way to go.  Typically the individual reading the book has a distinct pleasant voice, and the good ones have a hypnotic ability to them.

My advice is to personally visit your local library (or visit them on the web) and see what format they are using to check out electronic books.  Each library will purchase only a few electronic copies of books, similar to paper books.  When your time expires to have the electronic copy the book will simply disappear from your electronic device, whether it be audio or visual.  One unknown caveat to this is that the book will disappear after due date ONLY if connected to the internet somehow.  So if you are not done with the book turn off wifi and 3-4G capability for the device.  The electronic book stays until you reconnect to the internet in some form.

A well told tale takes one to places far beyond the realm.

On a slight tangent......I've caught myself trying to flip pages when reading something on my phone....that's when I know I need some sleep.

I was the same way in my chairborne ranger career Mark.  I wrote for a living and my bosses always expected perfection.  Spell check and other computer tools don't exist on paper, but I needed to read and edit on paper to avoid the Wrath of Khan (or the Col).

Since retirement, I follow more of a Mark Twain colloquial style of writing..... write like you speak and screw many of the proper rules.  Willow can edit all he wants......... it's not like I'm getting a C in 4th year VRCC Class.   Grin

Audio books. Listen to Sam Manomb tell his story of riding his motorcycle around the world over an eight year period. Starting with Into Africa, Under Aisian Skies, Distant Suns, and finishing with Tortillias To Totems. Written, published, and narrated by Sam. If you like those and want more books about motorcycle travel, hit me up.
Podcasts. The best podcast that I have heard is called Adventure Riders Radio and ARR Raw. Both include some great interviews, tips, and stories about motorcycle adventure and travel.
If none of these get you fired to to ride your bike you might as well hang a for sale sign on it watch tv.  cooldude

I'm not very good at this computer stuff, so bear (bare ?) with me. There is an app called overdrive, download that, then it asks you to pick our library and your library card #. I had to go get one at the library. Once you put that in you can pick what you want and upload it. It actually was pretty easy, even for me.  cooldude

In addition to the above suggestions,

1) Your local library should have a cloud library or digital library you can access with the proper app; or

2) iPhone: If you have a book on CD, copy the CDs to iTunes and load to your phone the same way you load music. (I assume loading MP3s is similar for Androids, etc.)
