Christ first and always

Richmond, Kentucky

« on: June 07, 2018, 03:27:04 PM »

Britmans post about moving and getting out of traffic prompted me to share this. I’m moving to Richmond, Kentucky which is about 20 minutes from my sons house in Lexington, Ky. I am about 4 miles east of the closest entrance to I75 which barring terrible weather or a major traffic mishap seems to be an easy ride back and fourth (6 lanes along this section) so it is faster to his house than it is to get from one side of Lexington to the other.

However I did look into other ways into Lexington without using the interstate and I discovered this,

Not only arethere some excellent motorcycle roads (curvy and hilly) but in less that 10 miles there is a ferry to cross the Kentucky river. Pretty kool except late evenings when the ferry shuts down. I also used some back roads traveling from Campbellsville, my home town about 90 miles away which were nice for a Sunday afternoon cruise. Once I have moved I’ll have to document the roads as I was just out wandering and didn’t pay much attention to road signs or highway numbers.

Still keeping an eye out for country stores that sell fresh sliced bologna sandwiches and also a place with great bar-b-cue.

John,

Don't forget the 'hoop cheese' too! Congrats on the new digs... As for remote locations, I once worked with a guy from Kentucky. He told us his family had lived so far back up in the holler, when folks came to visit them, they had to ride a pregnant mare in, so they could ride the colt back out... Best of luck to ya!!!

Thanks, Bruce! Hoop chesse, hmmmm? I’m open to that too. I’ve heard that there are places in eastern Kentucky that’s so far back in the woods that they have to pump in the sunshine!

I'm lucky that there are 4 BBQ places within 10 miles. The nearest is only 1.7 miles.

John,
This area offers many hidden treasures and roads even I haven't been to or on yet.   Just a matter of time to get there.  Have crossed that ferry many times.   Looking forward to having you in the area.   cooldude

Those all look like great choices, ain’t America great! Even though I have lived in Kentucky 99% of my life the eastern end is pretty much unexplored by me. I have an Aunt and Uncle who have lived in Richmond since the early 60’s and they love to eat and search out great spots so I’ll have a bit of help there.

All I can report for now is that I have a Waffle House and a Cracker Barrel about 4 miles from the new house.

I had seriously considered selling the Valkyrie lately due to time constraints and costs associated with moving but after seeing the immediate area I’ll be holding off on that thought. On a sad note, I came to the conclusion that due to the current market and the bikes maintenance needs it’s probably worth more being parted out! That would be tough to do with a ride you’ve had for 18 years.

Is that the Green River Ferry?  I have ridden that one several times. Sort of cool.

No the ferry is on the Kentucky River, I’ll have to look up it’s given name. Valley View Ferry, and a short history lesson. Almost like a ride report!
