Bigger battery?

I'm thinking about putting a larger battery in my bike.
Like a battery out of an 1800 VTX maybe.

YTX20HL-BS

I've spent enough on Odyssey batteries, they don't last. I've figured out a way to get my battery back standing up, though I don't like it that way. I burned up an EFI control fronm an accidental touch with 12V+. So I laid the battery down to keep the terminals out of the ECM area.

But I'm tired of having a battery that isn't "off the shelf"
Some say all AGM batteries can lay down others say no.

Anyway, is it detrimental to the charging system to go up size on the battery?

Pete

Upsizing a battery will not cause any problems, an usually will last somewhat longer, all things being equal. Did this to a V65 in 1986 and am still using it today with no problems. Used a GL1000,1200,1500 battery. Just casual glance says space is the issue for a Valkyrie. When my Valkyrie battery dies I will be looking at using the Goldwing battery if possible. Thanks Pete.

Stock battery box is long gone. I welded one up as part of the rear fender. Made lots of extra room. I needed more room for the EFI equipment.

If you have the room I can see no downside. And with my V65 it cured the odd size battery and short battery life issues. Thanks Pete.

Have you looked at the Powersport battery? It's made by Yuasa and has 30% more Cold cranking amps than OEM: http://www.batterystuff.com/batteries/motorcycle/YTX14H-BS.html

Robert

If you can fit it no downside to a bigger battery kinda like having a bigger bank account. ;D

Nice catch. Thanks. I noticed that they make a version for my Moto Guzzi, as well.

Jeff:

I am running  a full sized car battery on my sidecar bike, 97 standard.  It was  on the bike when I bought it in Sept. of this yr.   The guy that set it up had been running it for a couple of yrs. I have only put on 700 mi.  Apparently there is no charging issues.

I didn't think there would be a problem but I remember a long time ago Mark T had some issue with battery size. I found the answer on his site. His Compufire high output alt will fry a std Valk battery, it has to have a larger battery, not the other way around.

Thanks
