VRCC #437 "Form follows Function"

Colorado Front Range - elevation 2.005 km

Can't wait.  Got the Weatherby 300 win mag just about ready to go.  Couldn't get the factory synthetic stock to float effectively so I got a Boyd's laminated stock to replace it.  That did it - plenty rigid.  Added a Timney trigger - breaks crisp right at 4#.  She kicks a LOT.  Had to fold up a towel to protect my torn rotator cuff shoulder.  So I got a Decelerator pad for the stock since I didn't want to modify it.  Now the eye relief is too much.  Got a 20MOA one piece picatinny rail scope mount and Weaver tactical rings to move the Leupold back.  Finished it off with a Harris bench bipod and a 2-pnt sling and she's just about ready.

Getting under 1 MOA on 3-shot (cold) groups using a Lead Sled at the range - with factory ammo Win 180gr Power Points!  Haven't started hand loads yet.

All at 100 yds. First 2 you can cover with a quarter.  #3, silver dollar.  4 has a flyer.  Oh well.

Beautiful and functional.

The laminated stock will give you some more recoil relief too with the added weight vs the synthetic stock  cooldude.

My Ruger #1 .300 Win Mag is a heavy pig, not the best bush gun, but I appreaciate the weight when I squeeze the trigger.

Is that the Vanguard action? If so did you have any problems with the pillars in the Boyd stock? I have a 7mm-08 that I am planning to glass bed but have found there is almost no wood left to add pillars to the laminated stock. It is a different gun (Howa) and different stock even though the action is the same as a Vanguard. I plan taking the 7mm-08 on a prairie goat hunt in the fall.
My .300 Win mag is a Browning A-bolt and it will beat you up at the range, especially with 200 grain bullets and maxed out loads. Brass only gets used twice and it is kaput (technical term). Fortunately you only need one well placed round if hunting. Precision shooting would be hard on the shoulder with the round I hunt with as I want maximum knock down power downrange as opposed to quarter sized groupings at 300 or more yards. I will settle for a paper bill folded in half size pattern for a hunting round at that range.

It's the V1 action.  Made by Howa who also made a volume of Weatherby Mark V actions IIRC.  Pretty sure my beautiful Browning .270 I had to sell decades ago as a poor student was made by them also.  My Boyd's stock I got used online - lightly used.  It had been glass bedded on the forend.  I simply removed the glass bedding, added some plastic shim to the recoil lug well, and VOILA the full floating was accomplished back to the recoil lug.

That is a fine looking hunting rig Cheesy

The big 30 cals sure do recoil, One of the rifles I use is a 300RUM, I don't range shoot much but do paddock shoot at steel, also do shoot longer distances with goat culling at times so need to spot my POI so I went down the road of making a brake and it sure makes it easy to shoot, my son has been shooting it since he was 8 years old Cheesy

Down side is noise if you shoot from a range with a roof...... not nice for all those around you too Wink

In this video was from a forum shoot I set up, only from the shorter range site but I am the first shooter in it, you can see the rifle pretty much doesn't lift at all and they are quite hot loads.... I ended up backing them off a little to extend the case life, from memory 200gr Amax @ 3250fps

About 5 years back I started to switch over to all copper bullets, shooting Federal Trophy Copper until this year when we started to hand load pure copper. Started using Hammer Bullets from MT.

https://hammerbullets.com/

first 5 shot group at 100 yards was .538 7WSM

Hammer Time is their boards where you can get more support.

Hunting. This was supposed to be the year I had all my stuff together to bag a wild pig.

Well, living at the doctor's office has delayed that. I always said it's only real hunting if you use an arrow or a pistol.

I have both now and the pigs are making their presence known on our hunting plot.  Maybe it's not too late to get out there this fall if my results can just hold to the positive.

Lethal, that is a very interesting muzzle brake, and looks effective.  It looks (in both the pic and the video) like it is machined out of the barrel itself and not screwed on.  Can that be?

Nice shooting BTW.

No I made the break out of good quality alloy and turned it to be a nice fit, it has 3 holes each side facing up and back, tried several designs and that gave the best results without disturbing the ground to much, nothing worse that a shower of dust in the eyes each firing

Since that pic I painted the action/barrel & brake with an etch 2 pot color to stop the glare....I got it less barrel so picked up a old 308 target barrel and reamed it to 300 RUM on my old lathe (handy old clunker of the lathe.... Just what every panel beating shop needs)

Most of my rifles are builds from cheaper bits Wink

My favorite way to Hog hunt is walking and stalking, with either the bow or a handgun(usually my 45LC Vaquero). I like to get up close and personal. My closest shot was 7ft. If the wind is right you can get right up on them, their eyesight isn't the best, their hearing is really good but they alot of noise themselves so you need to be quiet but if you do make a little noise, alot of times they will ignore it. But you can't bet the nose on them, better than a Bloodhound. If the wind ain't right they can get a whiff of you 100yds away.
