Feeling old!  I went out to eat today.  While sitting there eating my fast food, I noticed a couple with two teen age girls enter the restaurant and place their order.  They all made their way to a table just one space from the table I was at.  Then all 4 of them proceeded to give 100% of their attention to their personal phone.  When the food came, the man and woman both set their phone aside just momentarily but picked it up again every few moments to check and type some more while continuing to eat.  Neither girl ever let go of their phone, keeping it in one hand and reading and typing between bites of food.

I suddenly felt old and out of touch with today’s society.  Also, I began to feel sad for those people and the others like them.  In my generation many people failed to learn healthy social skills and I suspect this modern lack of personal face to face social interaction will cause even more people to struggle with relationships.  Time will reveal the answer to that.

I hear you Jerry. There is hardly a day goes by that I don't see young ladies in the store shopping, on their phones completely ignoring their kids.

I would be fine with NO cell (or should I say smartphones) phone ever invented EVER.

I deal every single day with a 24 year old at work screwing around on his cell phone on company time about 2 hours per day.  My 35+ year old boss is not much better on his cell phone for over 1 hour per day all PERSONAL BUSINESS.   Both do it right in front of others all day long like they have a RIGHT to NOT work.

I ratted both of them out to my bosses boss and told him I do not want to hear one word to ME about falling behind 100's of hours of work when those 2 screw around every single day and have NEVER once put in an 8 hour WORK day while I work 3-4 hours overtime every single night.

If the truth sets me free, so be it, good luck finding someone else... tickedoff

AND while sitting like that stead of talking to one another they were-sigh-texting one another!  Lips Sealed She-Youngest Daughter-got P Od at me every Sunday before we entered Church. Made her put her cell phone in da glove box along with mine then locked glove box and also locked car. Told her 1 hour outa seven days she weren't gonna die with out her cell phone. She did NOT die during that hour but you'd a thunk she had!  2funny RIDE SAFE.

Jerry,

I know what you're talking about... and, I get the same sensation you do whenever I stumble upon those things, too. Everybody seeks the same things in that we all need connectivity, kinship, and relevance. Each generation exists in a separate world from all others that just happen to overlap in time and space. Each seeks the same things, but in the 'current', 'in' way that happens to be in vogue.

Many of the things we did in our youth were as foreign and bazar to older folks then as the 'new' things we observe today are to us. Then as now, they are neither good nor bad, they are simply different. Each has advantages, as surely as each has its own unique social consequences. The drama continues, and will ad infinitum... It is interesting to observe and ponder, though... isn't it...?

Phooey... sitting in my 73 Civic blaring "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" on my cassette

Rob,
I see a lot of that too.  But my mom, although stern and often demanding, let me run fairly free.  Course, if I did something wrong, the paddle would be used.  I temper my thoughts by how well behaved the kids are.

Bigwolf

Cookiedough,
I agree, it can be a problem in the workplace, but I have seen the same abuse with the desktop computer.  Many folks do personal stuff while on the clock and on the company computer.  Many people will do all they can get by with.

Bigwolf

Whiskey man,
It is just amazing to me that some people can be so addicted to a phone.

Bigwolf

Old2soon,
Some bits of wisdom seem impossible to impart to the young.  Good that you tried though.  It may help her later in life.

Bigwolf

Dirty Dan,
I like the way you are thinking.

Bigwolf

RainMaker,
I am believing you are correct.  I have never used mine that way so I don’t need a recovery program for that yet.  I guess I am so old I still prefer and enjoy face to face communication.

Bigwolf

Joe,
Encouraging the rats ......... or just luring them into the trap?

Bigwolf

Bruce,
You understand my thoughts so well my friend.

Bigwolf

Mike,
LOL, stoplights!  The old man was really out of his mind when I stopped to help his young daughter get her car going again.  I don’t understand why he was so angry at me for trying to be helpful.  Maybe it was the Steppinwolf blaring on the tape player in my obviously heavily modified hot rod truck or my shoulder length hair and beard.........nah! Who would have a problem with that?

Well said Whiskey Man and that talk needs to be off the clock and off company property. I watched a rat take a beating in a Super 8 parking lot we was staying at a few years ago we had to pull the dude off him. Needless to say he was never seen again he walked away from a six figure union job and everyone was glad the ass kissing prick was gone.

My phone took a bath yesterday. No, it wasn't the toilet. I took my son to Six Flags yesterday, and the double ziplock bag with my stuff in it leaked really badly; like fishbowl badly. I think it was the super high waterslide that made the boys feel like they hit a brick wall when I hit the bottom water basin.  Shocked

I shouldn't have even had the phone with me, but the wife had to work, so I was taking some pictures. Well, the phone has been in a bag of rice since yesterday, disassembled, but I doubt it's coming back from the dead. I know it isn't likely to be feasible, but I wish I could say the hell with it and stay phone-free. But... it's my main contact point, as well as my only camera, as well as my GPS. Yup, probably be replacing it.

Call it whatever, but the boss and the 24 year old should be fired ASAP months ago.  If it affects my job where they do not pull their weight then they need to be gone.  Either that, or fire me, fine with that as well.  No one here has a clue, as the saying goes walk a mile in others' shoes before judging others.  Both are on the chopping block and pretty sure the 24 year old is going back soon to work for his Daddy in another state.  He has the capability to do an o.k. job, but to get him to follow thru and work even a 7 hour day will never happen.

I can relate. Not to the phone, but to the boys. Took my grandson to the Las Vegas water park a few months back. He has become quite the daredevil. They have a slide that drops straight down and then hits the water at the bottom. I seriously considered running to Walmartfor a jockstrap after the third trip.

That's the one. Stand in a booth... 3,2,1... floor drops out and you don't even have time to remember the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration before you slam that water like Thor's hammer.

Yes, it is never good to be telling tales on other folks.  You never know what is going on in their life. Sometime you might need some people to cut you some slack and cover for you.
When I was shift supervisor, I hated it when someone came to me with dirt on someone else.  I made it clear.....if I did not see it myself, it didn’t happen.  When I was just another worker bee and doing 90% of the work on my shift while the other 2 shifts combined did only the other 10%, I figured I still owed the company 8 hours.  What happened on the other shifts was not my problem.

I've been in charge of a crew varying from 6-12 for the last 40 years. There is NOTHING I despise more than a worker trying to ingratiate himself by ratting out one of his fellow workers. The ones that do that can not be trusted under any circumstances . I will take an employee that screws up once in a while over them every day.
