Unfortunately, I read because the lions have now tasted humans, they might be destroyed.

I hope it's not true.

They should feed any caught poachers to the lions.

Lions normally (there are a few exceptions) strangle to death their victims before consuming.

Harsh judgement by the O.P. and some.  Poaching is violating a man made law.  I don't have the details on the poachers, what motivated them, or why they resorted to killing without a license.  I'm a bit reluctant to simply assume they deserved the death penalty.  Maybe the real criminals (violators of man made laws) are the ones who hired or made it profitable for these people to be poaching.  Do those folks deserve to be eaten by lions?  How do we arrange that?

I have no personal experience but just wonder, can humans really taste that good?

Steak tartar and all (raw).

We're certainly a lot slower than gazelles and most of their other prey.  So there's that.

I guess if they chase you around enough, the meat is already salted (sweat).

There is blame all the way to the end user of whatever body part a beautiful in the wild creature, such as rhinos, gorillas, elephants, are killed for.

But the poacher is the one with the gun. They start the process.

I'm sure I don't understand the impetus for their action, but the result of their chosen employment is detrimental to the action of the reserves set aside for the safety and continued existence of the protected species.

I recently saw a report of a officially dehorned mother rhino killed for the last 1-2 inches of her horn stump.

That crap pisses me off. Angry

All poachers deserve to be killed. The laws are in place to protect animals, if not we as humans would hunt and kill every last one of them into extinction. We can not just take what we need any more. These guys were killing just for the rhino horns to sell on the black market. Everyone involved in the killing and selling/buying of these black market items should all be killed. I love to hunt but poachers make it hard for us that follow the law. I have turned several people in for killing a deer and not checking it in. I have no sympathy for these low lifes.

I have found in my older age that I am having less and less patience with people who knowingly do things they shouldnt.  These poachers are not only wiping out a species for profit but they only take the rhinos horn that when ground up is used for an aphrodisiac so I've read.  They just leave the body to rot.   I'm sure the carcass feeds other animals.  I'm a hunter but it just messes with my mind to read about this kind of stuff.    I still think they got what they deserved.

what motivated them is money. F-them. I'd have no problem with catching the higher ups in that trade, putting a pork chop necklace around their necks and turning them loose on the plains of the Serengeti, let them get eaten too.
I'm a hunter, I have no problem with hunting in a ethical manner. But when you get these assholes who kill something to just leave it to rot except for 1 piece that they cut off and sell because some Chinese guy thinks it will make his dick hard. I hope the lions get more of them.

Think of the millions per yr of tax payers money it must take to man and maintain a very large game preserve for endangered species.  And some jerks want to slip in and use silencers to steal the endangered species lives.  They knew there were lions there....they callculated the risk.....and took the risk.....and lost.   They committed occupational suicide.

Just so you know a lot, maybe most have families that are at starving or near starving levels of poverty.  I'm not at all saying it makes them innocent, but I have a hard time believing that killing the poverty stricken who are willing to do what they have to to get by is going to solve the problem.

The real solution is dealing with the ones who make it lucrative.  Perhaps part of the problem is some of our own friends depending upon what kind of jewelry they're wearing.

What would you do to feed your children?  Would the law make a difference to you?

Willow I respect your opinion but  the poachers could make a more meager living same as other people in their country....but same as here some choose to rob, steal, or sell drugs because it pays more....same as selling Rhino horns.

Maybe in poverty stricken places like that, these people need to stop breeding like rabbits when they cannot afford to feed a rabbit.
I get sick of seeing all these "feed the starving children of the world" type of commercials, for only 60 cents a day you can feed this family of 6 or whatever. Stop breeding already.
On the plus side, we need to abolish our food stamp and WIC programs and put these 60 cents a day folks in charge.

We were pretty much in agreement until the public executions part.   I hold no grudge against the lions and, I can understand why some folks poach.  Didn't say I agreed with poaching but, I'll do what I have to, to feed my family.

Public executions?   Yeah, I think they should be televised and shown live.     There are lessons in life one will learn and remember if educated.

the poachers are not feeding their family with what they kill. They kill cut the horns off and leave the body to rot. And don't go telling me they do it for the money. If they really wanted to feed their family they would kill smaller game without the prosecution of killing endangered species. These guys all deserve to die. More then likley they use their earnings for drugs and hookers not to feed their family.

Ha, Gavin, that reminds me of a MI deer hunting camp story.

A bunch of guys shared a deer camp/cabin up north every year.  They even had an old guy to watch the place and be caretaker.  One year, all the wives thought they'd surprise the fellows and run up together and do a surprise visit. When the van load of ladies showed up at the caretakers gate, he wouldn't let them pass... he told them they all had their wives with them this year.

I have no doubt that your opinion is valid in many cases.  But, that doesn't mean it's the case for all.
I still don't feel sorry for the poachers that got ate.   We are all responsible for the dumb decisions, actions and risks we take.    I distinctly remember doing some pretty stupid things in my life.  Luckily, none of them involved lions.  Wink

You are right Willow,  Ive been in a few foreign countries and we are spoiled here.   However, you have to have laws.   The game preserve law says it is illegal to kill endangered species.... not it is ilegal to endangered species unless your children are hungry.   I find it hard to believe these poachers were impoverished.  They had expensive guns, silencees, and saws and other tools.   They also had vehicles.  They could have sold them to feed their families.

i have a close friend that lives over there and works to preserve the wildlife. The stories he has told me are almost unreal. We only see a fraction of what goes on and even that is half truths. They are not feeding anyone but their pockets. The people poaching are not poor, they are very wealthy. More like radicals, but still wealthy. I am not pretending to know what goes on over there. I know for a fact what is going on, you seem to be the one pretending.

The variation I heard on that story was it was deer hunting (not fishing), and the wife swapped out his deer rifle for a BB gun inside the zippered gun case.  When he returned from hunting, she asked him how his rifle worked and he said fine, and she unzipped the case and showed him the BB gun (which was the first he'd seen it).

Both of mine were told as true stories.  Who knows, they could have happened.  Smiley

Then there's the guy seen wearing a woman's girdle in the golf course locker room.  His caddy asked how long he had been wearing that thing, and the guy said... ever since my wife found it under the front seat of my truck.

I suspect my Uncle Ken may have been subject in some manner to these humorous hunting stories.  And those would have occurred in the deer season of Northern Michigan, Roscommon County.  While the rest of our clan, my Father, Uncles and cousins would stay in and rest to get up at 4 am to be at our blinds by day break, my Uncle Ken would go out and carouse.  When he passed on 10 years ago he was with his 9th wife.

In Genesis it states man was to have dominion over the fish, fowl, cattle and all creeping things.  For me a huge part of this is we are the caretakers of them and when endangered we have to put up controls, and make sure they live on.  Humans have done horrendous harm to the animals and we have also done great deeds.  The Bison were almost hunted to extinction to 39 total in Yellowstone in 1900.  Now they are off the endangered list.  I never saw an Eagle growing up as a child in Central Michigan.   Now they are thankfully common place.  My heart hangs heavy for the Rhino and Gorillas and any other great creature that the filthy scoundrels think they have some right to kill and anyone associated with these grievious acts either directly or indirectly.
