Try some crumpled up aluminum foil, chrome polish and finish with glass cleaner.
If I remember correctly DDT told me about that.....  Wink

Edited: The crumpled up aluminum foil method requires a light touch!
As with any abrasive material, the more aggressive you get, the greater the danger of going too far exists.

While it can burn your hands (so protect them), some stuff comes off easier when heated up.

Patience, the chrome will get rubbed (if you rub too hard).

Oven cleaner is said to work.  (some works hot, some works cold)

Get some quality metal polish and it does take some elbow grease but will come off and leave no scratches.

I used easy off oven cleaner on the chrome to get boot marks off. I wouldn't leave it on for a week like I did with the chrome oven racks that I forgot to hose off (it discolored the chrome ).

I tried the aluminum foil trick and scratched the pipes so I won't be trying that anymore.

Sherry had her boots resting on the pipes and melted a nice black spot on them and while super hot after we pulled into the garage I took a piece of soft pine wood used for a wedge or shim and it worked amazing.  Came right off

Yep,  0000 steel wool rubbed lightly with some cheap turtle wax branded chrome polish you get in a green bottle at walmart for a few bucks works wonders.  It also removes most small rust spots on chrome as well with a cloth rag I try first before using 0000 steel wool.

I use 0000 steel wool wetted with WD40 which is a great chrome cleaner. I buy the WD40 by the gallon to wet the SS well. Don't scrub with it, just use the SS as a carrier to hold the WD40.  Not saying it will clean everything - but most everything.

Pick up some cleaning pads at Dollar Tree or Big Lots for a dollar a box that have soap inside.  They work great for taking off surface rust on pipes and probably will do what you want.  Be sure to rewax everything you clean.
