Route 66

   I was reading threevalks post, about his trip to Alaska. He mentions rt 66. Wondering how is that trip? I'm guessing slow going because of lottsa traffic? It is a trip that's in the back of my mind. Next June I get my 5th week of vacay. I have always wanted to "go west young man".

If you go through Tucumcari, NM, stay at the Historic Route 66 Motel.  Don't let the price fool you, the place is very nice, and you'll meet all kinds of people travelling the 'Mother Road'.  When I stayed there, I talked with a group of police from Switzerland who were touring on rented Harleys for a magazine article.  I also met three men from Australia who were driving the route in a '65 T-Bird they bought in Tennessee, then having it shipped home from L.A.





That's my Valkyrie next to the 2 Studebaker Hawks.  One was the Super Hawk with the Paxton-supercharged V8!

Old rt 66 is not maintained in all places. I 40 kind of took over. From New Mexico to California is really nice country.

If you get to Elk City, OK, check out the Route 66 Museum.  It has over a dozen buildings filled with lots of interesting old stuff, and it only costs 5 bucks!

Here's one more place.  It's on I-40 in the Texas Panhandle, between Groom and McLean.  It's a rest area with a Route 66 theme.  Very nicely done.

We were on that ride with Keith and Jane(3valks) if you want to see rt66 that is the ride you want to be on 12 days from Chicago to Santa Monica you have to sigh up to be part of the ride.

Airline strike-1965 1966??-anywho I bought a 64 Corvair and drove from San Diego up to RT 66 and ALL the way to well North of Chicago. I-40 was still being installed then. As was I-44. As was I-55. I really HATED to see old RT 66 fall into disrepair.    MOTHER road indeed. I remember BUYING drinking water at a Resturant in New Mexico cuz the owner had to truck it in as his well wasn't done when I was there. I also remember a Lot of 66 was 2 lane. Meeting those old cab over big rigs Would test the suspension on the Corvair!  Find as much of that Old Road as ya can cuz afore ya knows it That Road will become rare as hens teeth.  RIDE SAFE.

Danny and I are planning on riding all of 66 next year, start in Chicago and go all the way to the pier.
Have ridden some short distance on it, but want to get it ALL done, just because, bucket list thing I guess.
Rode all the Blue Ridge Parkway this year on the way to Inzane.

Back in the 90s Touring Rout 66 I met an older couple who rented a Harley in Chicago and in 21 days had to turn bike in at dealer in Los Angeles.  I have reflected on this many times and thought if a guy was thinking of switching to Harley it might be a good way to really ck one out.
