That article says 11 dead.... it's actually 17 dead.

Those things (ducks) are not (never) meant for storm warning water conditions.  They look like they're sinking, even in flat water.

Storm warnings were issued for that water 30 minutes before those rides left. (so here come the wrongful death civil suits)

I won't get in packed (and inescapable) places with crowds of humans, almost ever.

You'll never see me on a cruise ship, ever.

No buses, no Metro subways (anymore), planes only if I have to, no amusement parks, no cities (other than passing through), no carnivals, no rock concerts, no packed night clubs, no crowded elevators, no flooded caves.  Regular trains are still OK (best seats in mass transit) (you can always jump out a window).

I'm not agoraphobic or claustrophobic.  I just don't like inescapable places, and crowds of humans (with the expected and usual amount of defective units).

Took the family-soooo it been a day or 4 ago-on the Ducks at Branson. I was NOT impressed with the seating arrangements then and been 15 year ago or so since that happened. Also looks like some sorta side curtain(s) in the video. NOBODY had to put on a life vest at the time I went. Believe the news mentioned passengers are Not REQUIRED to wear life vests. ALL the local news/weather channels were warning of the high winds ahead of the storm proper. The video of the duck going down-well the water conditions-put me in mind of Lake Michigan and the Pacific Ocean during a blow. Remember the ex and the kids looking at me sideways when I mentioned exit strategies in an emergency. Whether I'm a regular or in someplace new to me as soon as I walk in I'm scanning people and exits and general conditions. There is One Person on this planet that I can feel almost comfortable with when my back is to the door. My Brother Ross-aka daprez.  cooldude Maybe if yer 21 or under no matter the weather you should have a life vest on when riding the ducks. RIDE SAFE.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this , old2soon. I'm always scanning for escape routes, so if there is anything goes wrong, I will at least have a fighting chance to survive.

I guess I am paranoid also. In a new area , I count steps , look for exits , location of fire extinguishers and fire axes if there.  I look for the stairs in an elevator building. Some of this goes back to military training. If visibility is gone , I at least have a chance.

Ban Boats Smiley

They are not really boats, they are trucks that float (if you're lucky).  Lousy trucks too.

Screw life jackets.  But if they made you suit up in complete scuba gear and air tanks, it would probably hurt business.

From Wikipedia-D U K W-military designation-were built from 1942 to 1945. Couple over 21000 were built. They were NOT designed for longevity. The hull thickness as built varied from 1/16" to 1/8". And the original capacity as built was 24 troops and one driver. Supposedly could remain afloat with a 2" diameter hull breach with the built in bilge pump. Take from this what you will. RIDE SAFE.

Did a duck boat tour in Boston. Had seen a few pix of the Duck in the harbor before we took off. Judging from how it sat with the waterline in relation to the gunwales, I didn't like the looks of the canopy and side curtains encapsulating the occupants. Strategically, me and mine were at the head of the line to board the craft. I opted for the rear-most seats across the stern and in the open air outside the canopy - as close as you can get to make a quick unimpeded exit. Upon entry into the bay, due to a shortage of freeboard across the stern I kept one eye on the surrounding view and one eye on the water churning up from the aft end as we motored along. I enjoyed the surface street ride in the city more than the water crossing.

A buddy of mine who owned a bar on one of the Congamond lakes in Southwick, MA had one.  This was back in the 80's.  Congamond is in both MA and CT.

State of MA wouldn't let him drive it on both the road and the water, so he registered as a truck in MA and a boat in CT.

It was a blast to go out of his bar on the lake, float down to CT and drive it back.

Never would it go out in inclement weather.  Not a very good boat or truck.

One of my sisters asked me to go on one of those in Boston about 20 years ago when they became popular.

Told her "No thanks, been there done that, not interested."

This is a very sad story, that "Duck" should have never left the dock.

One of the things the "news" channel mentioned is the Fact each states laws are different regarding water safety and enforcement of the rules. Have Zero idea how much sway the Coast Guard has regarding Missouri water safety. But as others have stated the Duck should have Never put out onto That tour. And as I also stated this particular storm blew up QUICKLY. In fact the weather guy at KY3 made mention of the impending blow and to viewers watching if you know of anybody on the water now advise them to get ashore as quickly as possible. In fact I got weather warnings on my cell phone. sad tragic needless loss of life  Cry RIDE SAFE.

I haven't seen any video of it, and doubt I want to. But, it seems like when the wind started approaching they could have turned and made it to shore.

I don't think that hard canopy on there is standard issue. That thing could be an uncontrollable sail in 65mph winds. Looks to me like the wind could toss it sideways enough to take on water or capsize.
I have taken my family on the ducks in Branson on that lake about 5 yrs. ago, really enjoyable on a calm lake. Video of the lake looks like the ocean waves during that storm. Very sad. Very very sad.

One would have hoped that their base operator would have been monitoring weather conditions as that massive front approached, but it not may have happened or was ignored if it did.

Colorado lost 14 firefighters back in 1994 on a mountainside when a similar thing happened and a fire blew up; leading fronts are notorious for ferocious winds coming quickly and hard.

That lake is probably glassy and ripply most of the time that folks are out on it.
A very sad story repeated.  Now, the lesson must be learned and precautions taken in the future.
The investigation will conclude with the reasons why it happened the way it did and the survivors' stories will be told.
Rest to their souls and comfort for those that love them.

I think you hit it, the high winds caused the high waves and moved the boat due to the sail action, compounding the swapping.

I quickly watched some of the video, had to turn it off, but I think the boat was broadside to the winds.

I saw the company CEO on the news this morning and he seems genuinely upset. Why wouldn't he.

Poor training and procedures in play here.
