I was in a car that got that (only it was the left rear corner that got run over) back in
the 70's... late one night, midnight or so, in Bob Wilroy's Sunbird, one of his marantz
speakers flew off the rear window ledge and hit Joel Jenkins in the head, Bob Wilroy
chased off down 291 after the trucker beeping and yelling out the window, "hey, you
ran over me man!"

Sadly, that is what it has come to.  I, too, have dash cams in both cars.

Glad she's alright. Things are replaceable; people are not. Hopefully, she still feels fine in the morning. Sometimes you took more of a hit than you think you did.

Heard from the bodyshop today....the car is repairable. No structural damage other than bumper/mounts and fender mount...all unbolt/rebolt parts. Emissions stuffs in the fender, lights, plastic nose, grill, such are no big deal.

The bumper mounts are compressible for front impacts, and thus, when caught from behind, are designed to pull apart before structural damage.

AC stopped working because the computer detected enough error codes that it shut down non-essentials so the car could still run.

Basic alignment reads good, though they will do it again after reassembly (they need full weight/distribution for accuracy).

Anyway, the cost is less than 1/3 what I was guessing.

This is good news. We LIKE the car, it's a solid and extremely well performing car, low miles, and it's paid for.

  A little scarey I'm sure. Glad she is fine  and glad it wasn't any worse damage to the car. Big Rigs can be oblivious to making contact sometimes, glad they stopped.

My little deer fender bender was over 3 grand in damages and this Altima looks to be over 5K in repairs. 

Make sure you take it to a reputable repair shop that has lifetime warranty on repairs, as most do nowadays. 

Even though not her fault, you best check with your insurance company since Progressive lied to me and screwed me over upon renewal when I hit the deer with my newer truck filing a comprehensive claim and told me NO increase in rates was unavoidable being comprehensive claim.  They lied, rates went up 15% on all 4 vehicles.  I called the claims rep/adjuster up and told him to pay my rate increase since he lied to me.  All he did was apologize to me for telling me false information, but that was not good enough for me told him to cough up the money anyways or get Progessive to do the right thing.

That Altima is one tough car to have survived the amount of damage it's taken in the last few years.  Glad you'll get it back.

Correct, no airbags. Wasn't a hit in a direction that required 'em.

Got smacked pretty hard, basically in the direction and location of the arrow in this pic:


Nissan in particular has done a pretty good job over the years of refining this...very few "unnecessary" deployments, and when they DO deploy, it's NOT all the bags like many cars...it's only the ones appropriate to the direction of the hit(s) and the actual occupant locations...this reduces repair costs AND allows for subsequent deployments in secondary hits in a really serious accident scenario.

And you are correct...any deployment requires the replacement of the central controller, and the bags are expensive, and trim/upholstery etc gets torn up..

Yeah, I've been through it with a Dodge Dakota.  All deployed, and it caused the insurance to total the truck.

I had to go on line and look up the rules and laws, and discovered VA allowed use of salvage bags (never deployed, but in junked cars) (that issue is state by state, nationwide).  That alone took the truck from being totaled to economically repairable.  The shop said salvage bags were OK, but insisted on new sensor(s)/controller, which was like only a hundred bucks, so fine with me.

When I balked at their initial total, the ins co came back with an even more generous offer (much better than fair market value).  So I went to the wife and said, now is the time to consider a new (or nearly new used) car or truck, but she wanted to keep her truck (very nice, and fixed up a lot), so she got her truck back.  She needs a truck since she likes to run into things.

It's nice when your local (best) body shop owner comes out and says..... ahh, so the old Dakota needs some more work huh?    They've had it in like 5-6 times, but this one was the worst.  They are magicians, I tell you.

It's totally weird...that stuff is actually falling out of the sky...it's just possible it's the end of days or something...

There are some historical stories regarding that kind of environmental behavior.  Some of them didn't turn out so well.
