Lost a Finger

Yesterday my brotherinlaw, 56 yrs old, was on a window installation job and cut his left hand index finger off near the hand with a battery powered skill saw.   They took the finger with them to hospital but was not able to save it.    This man has worked with a skill saw his whole life doing windows and other carpentry work.    You guys be careful when using power tools.  If it can happen to him it can happen to anybody.

I feel for your brother in law. I know how one second can change you life. And you're right no one should ever think " it cannot happen to me".

A roofer that attended the same church as us did the same thing only it was his thumb.

Yep, my 68 year old uncle cut his first finger off a couple of months ago in his cabinet shop.  For some it doesn't take so long...

As we get older we seem to not notice some things as quickly and our situation awareness seems not as good and our quick reflexes also seem to slow some and out minds seem to not recognize or realize potential problems as quick.

Slow down and think folks, both are good ways to cope with age issues.

This is why I won't have a table saw.  OK, I do have a Shop Smith which has one it it's kit but I won't set it up.  Only use the 12" disc sander on that machine.  Also won't use a meat cutter's band saw - though I have a friend with one and we butcher our deer ourselves.  Do have and use a band saw but it's much smaller and less powerful.

Working in the ER I've seen several people missing a part or two. Had one guy cut off his big toe with a Skill Saw while pretty intoxicated. My mouth usually goes faster than my brain and I told him I guess he'll only be able to count to 19 now. He actually got a kick out of it, his wife, not so much.

There is no doubt that they are dangerous and can be deadly. I've used a band saw on a daily basis since I was 14. It bit me once when I was not paying it my full attention. I was 19 and had the hots for a meat wrapper that was 24. She was standing by me flirting with each other while I was cutting pork chops. The next thing I knew about an inch of the inside of my pinky finger was gone. Luckily the bone was just grazed and they were able to fix it up. But not until I had lost what seemed like 3 quarts of blood in their pan as they were taking care of me. It was a good lesson at an early age. Come to think of it, many of my misfortunes involved women in some way.

I probably should keep the rest to myself. But, she was a fiery redhead who enlightened me in many ways.

Reminds me of a concern when I used to fly - I have the T shirt that says:

I've been down hard twice in bike wrecks both at 70mph.  First from a left turner and 2nd from deer.  I've taken steps to reduce exposure to both since.

I am the poster child in my ring of friend's for safety glasses. Two years ago a table saw and a chunk of wood took out my right eye. It's always that one quick cut you think oh what hell. Then the next thing you know. Here's your sign.

         This thread reminded me of a newer table saw I observed on-This Old House. They used a raw hot dog and touched the morsel to the spinning blade. The blade retracted with out even marking the hot dog. The "cartridge" that retracts the blade gets two retractions then has to be replaced. I do not KNOW if the saw can be operated without the cartridge but would make more sense if cartridge MUST be installed to use.
          When my children were younger I'd run them out of the shop Before I used ANY power tools. And 1 or 2 adults I knew at the time would git run out too!  RIDE SAFE.
