Like IL and NYS have lots of extra (taxpayer) money laying around to cover their unconstitutional and illegal agendas/actions against gun owners and our our own NRA.

There's nothing like beating them in court, then making them pay all our legal fees and expenses of litigation.  (and it is expensive)  

Put another way, these dirt head States pay both sides of very expensive litigation, and lose the case entirely to boot.  

Who in the real world (unlike government) gets to keep their jobs after fumbling the ball this badly?

I don't see the NRA going anywhere.  This is a case of liberals prematurely gloating / claiming victory they don't have.  The NRA is running a big money / membership promotion now.  They aren't hurting for funds though they like to claim the sky is falling to scare folks into donations.  They have always done that.  And there are other big 2A groups that are just as effective if not more so.  It's just the NRA is the biggest and most visible.  I guarandamtee you the grassroots of gun owners will not let the David Hoggs of the world succeed.

The actual question this begs is this:  When State Govt officials take actions that are wrong, unconstitutional and/or illegal, and it costs the state treasury huge money in damages/costs which is ultimately paid for with State taxpayer money, why aren't the taxpayers allowed to sue the govt (and especially the actual govt officials who made these decisions and took these actions) for personal liability, to restore these funds to the state treasury?  It is all taxpayer money (States don't make money, they just spend it), so taxpayers should have standing to sue.

Sovereign Immunity has it's place, but there should be exceptions for egregious, intentional wrongs in violation of American law and constitution.
