I got to thinking about my teenage years today. Hubcap kind of bump started me on it the other day. I earned my first motorcycle by delivering newspapers at 5am, 7 days a week. One of the side effects of this was, it got me reading the newspaper every morning and become interested in politics at an early age. My leanings have swayed with time. We have always seemed to have a plethora of corrupt, inept, plain dumb politicians my entire life. And then it got me thinking, I could only count on one hand politicians that I admired from my entire life. Top of the list has always been a man named Jay Hammond. If there was one person that I could point to and say he is aligned with me nearly entirely he is it. He was a square shooter. He became our Governor in '74. I doubt they make men like him anymore.

As governor, Hammond advocated for fiscal responsibility, and introduced an amendment to the Alaska Constitution limiting state spending. This was mocked by one legislator as "Spendy Limitation," with an accompanying elegant and obfuscatory statement mimicking Hammond's unique way with the English language. He advocated for another constitutional amendment providing for governors to serve a single 6-year term without possibility of further service. He felt it would allow governors a free hand in accomplishing their goals.
He gave us our "Permanent Dividend". He did much for the state of Alaska and its people. He was an avid sportsman who lived a simple life on a lake with his bush plane.

After his 2 terms he started doing a TV show. It seems pretty kitchy now.

Lots of them.  

But you really have to gauge the man with his times, not just today's times.

I've always liked Teddy Roosevelt.  He was probably bipolar, but that just gave him more energy.









But he had his faults.  Most important men do. 

However, I have a lot more military leader heroes than politicians.

Its hard to admire anyone whose job it is to keep the public safe and promote responsible government that actually does his job. It means that everyone else is so below par that the one that does his job stands out as being extraordinary enough to admire.

Now someone who gives up a carer and a living for the good of a nation is someone to admire. The founding fathers are some examples and a few down through time. A job well done is thing of beauty and you could say the person is good at his job. But to admire someone it takes to go above and beyond the call of duty.

The more I've read on the guy the more I've liked him. Really hope he spars higher in the political spectrum in the future.

Agree 100% on SH... best PM we've had in my mind since I'v been voting. Fiscally and morally Conservative. Just did his job without caring or worrying about his image or inflicting his personal religious or ideological beliefs on the citizens of the country. Didn't need to be the star of the show or parade his family around catering to every special interest group.
Probably should have stepped down in favor of a new party leader before the last election as after 9-10 years a politician tends to lose the interest of the electorate over such a long tenure. As we have experienced here with the dufous we have now... you don't realize what you've got 'til its gone.
As far as BC politicians... I think we're a lost cause... none in particular that I can remember that I've thought real highly of...

Tom Vandergriff.  Mayor of Arlington and Congressman.  He loved our city of Arlington and worked hard to improve it.  He brought the Washington Senators to Arlington to become the Texas Rangers, got GM to build a major assembly plant here and also Six Flags Over Texas (the original one).  During his time as a congressman, he did not vote along party lines - he broke rank and voted as a representative of his district and for what was good for America.

And Rob - he was a Democrat during all those years.  He turned Republican in 1990 but was serving as a county judge at that time.

sounds like a good man Mark  Jay Hammond was much like this. The people of Alaska owe him much gratitude.

I would agree with MarkT.  Gowdy seems to be the best of the bunch in DC, by far.

He's fed up with Washington, though, and is not going to run again.

He had an awesome campaign commercial last time... some guys were
talking about him in a barber shop, listing all the good things about him.
They ended up doubting his funny haircut though... then the guy in the
last barber chair lowers his newspaper, and it's Gowdy... "Guys, I'm
sitting right here..."

I will have to admit "W" appears to be smarter and better than I gave him credit for in the past.

Truman  made the tough decisions and stuck to his core beliefs, dropped the bomb, fired a crazy MacArthur, stabilized the enemies of WWII after the war, recognized Israel, and worked for what was a good UN in those days and refused to bow to Russia or China.

He kind of messed up on Taiwan but what can you do?     He is my favorite President.


Honorable mention to Reagan and O'Neill because they knew how to get along after the day was done and got much done during those times

Politicians today seem incapable of that separation or ability to acknowledge the humanity of the opposition.
