I like funny looking little cars. Smokin' Joe likes to make fun of my Mini Cooper.
There's a picture (Reb have you looked for it?) of me and Joe in a Smart Car...

Anywho... there's this auction web site I like to look at (bringatrailer.com) where
they auction off lots of fancy and unusual cars and trucks... right now there's
a 1956 bmw isetta 300 on there...

When I was a motorcycle messenger in London I'd often see one that had been painted pink.

Not so weird.

It had a very LARGE key (remember wind up cars?) protruding from the back that slowly turned as the car was going down the road.

Always made me smile.

There is a blue Isetta about 40 miles from me. He drives it all over the town of Parker. I’ve always thought the Kei cars were pretty cool. I like these Suzuki’s

When we were in Ireland we met a really nice lady that guided us thru a confusing part of town with one of these Nissan Figaro. I thought it was badass.

Mike,

I've owned two Beemers before, both rag-tops, but neither looked anything like that! You do have interesting tastes in autos...   cooldude

Almost bought one of those Isettas new in 1957 when I was stationed at Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, SD. After my first winter there I was glad I didn't. What I'd like to find now is another tiny little Subaru 4-cyl. like one I had around 1973-4. Believe it was front wheel drive, room for two medium size adults in front and a lunchbox in back. Running daily between Orlando and New Smyrna for a few months I was getting mileage in the high 40's. Can't remember the model name but recall the fact it never quit except when I ran out of gas, never failed to start. The car was so light one person could push it with ease. Often wished I still had it when my office moved to a point 17 miles across town. It was just 4-cyl. with a radio and 2-window a/c, std. transmission and only one side of the wipers worked. Guess the linkage was busted for the other side but still a blast to drive. At the same time I owned a '69 Charger r/t, talk about opposite ends of performance/mileage. The r/t would outrun the little Suby in first gear. As for mileage....the Suby got more than 4x better than the r/t.

Found this Youtube video showing the model I had....1400cc of pavement ripping power. I took the spare out of the engine compartment and stuffed it in the trunk but the factory location is kinda unique. At the time I owned it we had a place with a small slope to the driveway, meaning I hardly ever used the starter. Just put it in gear, one shot with the gas pedal, clutch in and let it roll about 5'....pop the clutch and off you went.

My first car was this '62 Karmann Ghia VW.  Blazing speed with a 40-5 HP engine.

Mine didn't look this good.

Block heat only, which in practice meant you could get part of one foot warm putting it over the floor hole in winter.  And you had to carry a scraper on your lap for the inside of the windshield, unless you quit breathing.  But the biggest challenge was getting (mildly) lucky at the drive-in.  You could hurt yourself on the emergency brake and/or stick shift, if you weren't careful (built in fun governors).

The windshield wiper fluid was powered by the air in the spare tire, and you had to keep up with that to have any air at all in it.  If you aired it up to 60 lbs, you could shoot water into the convertible behind you.

And it had a 6 volt system, so my 8 track tape player was powered by an old 12 volt battery that was good for 3-4 tapes before it needed a recharge.

Got good mileage, though who cared when gas was 35 cents a gallon.

But it just beat the hell out of riding the school bus.
