California has banned plastic straws.   I know we need to cut back on plastic products to help save the earth.... so they say.... but seems to me you could take 15 billion straws and put them in a 50’ x 50’ x 50’ hole in the ground so what is the big deal about plastic straws?   Seems to me straws should be low on ways to save the earth

in a recent survey 90% of people think plastic straws are more of a problem than illegal immigration. What the hell kind of people are we raising?

Small point of clarification - They haven't banned straws, at least not yet.

Several cities have made it illegal for a waiter to give patrons one unless the patron specifically requests one. The waiter can be arrested and imprisoned for breaking this law.

Still incredibly silly and typical of Californistan but slightly different...

Although I'm sure they'll move to ban them soon enough.

...I'm resisting the urge to do a meme dump of all the wonderful memes this latest bit of California silliness has inspired. Haven't had my coffee yet.

I was in Northern Michigan last week and my drink had a paper straw in it. Kinda weird but it worked. But a tree had to die to make said paper straw.

I would rather see these places enforce a recycling law rather than what they have done.

California may put an American citizen in jail for plasticcstraws but will  allow an illegal alien in with govt benefits.    Wonder what would happen if the popo caught an illegal alien with a plastic straw?

This why they have started to ban them.  It's a start I guess.  :'(

really? you think plastic straws caused that?  Grin plastic straws is just a small fraction of what they were showing. They were probably picking up 95% leftover fishing gear from commercial fishermen.

AND some say the plastic mass in the ocean does not exist per say.  The plastic has broken down into small (less than a MM in size).  Stuff does wash up on shores, but the island of plastic does not exist.

The plastic garbage islands do exist. The Oceanic Garbage Rodent lives on them. They are endangered so nothing can be done. Except to make more garbage to ensure their survival.

remember this plastic straw scare was started by the flawed science project of a 10 yr old.
so we can conjecture, that most liber..../enviro.... are not smarter than a 10 yr old.

If the wait staff would not handle my drinking glass by the rim , I would not need a straw.

Maybe the restrictions are not due to environment concerns, but because plastic straws may cause cancer in California. Do you suppose the straws contain any of these chemicals, known to cause cancer in California?

Not really. If you adhere to the flat earth theory it should float off into the ionosphere in 4.1 years.  Smiley what problem ?

So at the next gathering of motorcyclists anywhere (Sturgis, InZane, Americade, Hell's Angels, Valhalla, annual runs, etc.) it should be pointed out and enforced by all sergeant at arms that no straws of any kind are to be used with any bottled beverage or can for the express purpose of saving lives.

oh boy  Embarrassed  do others always have to do the work for u?

https://response.restoration.noaa.gov/about/media/how-big-great-pacific-garbage-patch-science-vs-myth.html

The NOAA Marine Debris Program's Carey Morishige takes down two myths floating around with the rest of the debris about the garbage patches in a recent post on the Marine Debris Blog:

There is no "garbage patch," a name which conjures images of a floating landfill in the middle of the ocean, with miles of bobbing plastic bottles and rogue yogurt cups. Morishige explains this misnomer:

While it's true that these areas have a higher concentration of plastic than other parts of the ocean, much of the debris found in these areas are small bits of plastic (microplastics) that are suspended throughout the water column. A comparison I like to use is that the debris is more like flecks of pepper floating throughout a bowl of soup, rather than a skim of fat that accumulates (or sits) on the surface.

Some supermarkets have banned plastic bags over here .....but I use those to put rubbish in....now I will have to buy rubbish bags so what is that going to save Tongue

As for straws.....its been years since I used one, I drink from the glass Tongue

Actually that's a lie, I got a larger cup of drink from a burger chain and the cup was huge.....had no idea large was about 750ml so I used a straw  ..... Not used to drinks from that sort of outfit, small was probably enough Tongue

it figures u would follow an extreme liberal college not realizing that they are trying to get grant money by twisting the truth and making up things 1000 times worst then they are, because NOAA is lying.

Don't you ever get tired of whining and always using the Liberal sh*t when it's something you don't agree with, sheeese man give it a rest. The pictures looked a lot bigger than pepper flakes, and if you do a little more research, the net is full of pictures and video's like that.

Every time I'm denied a straw at a restaurant, I'm gonna go to Sam's/Costco and buy a case of 'em just to dump into the nearest river...

so u deny yale is a progressive liberal college? amazing.
so u believe in the govt agencies when they go after conservatives and Trump who want to preserve the US Constitution and America, but you don't believe in govt when it provides scientific truth that goes against your made up environmental whining that u evaluated in your mind without scientific evidence. In other words your emotional feelings trump sound scientific principles.
Got it. completely understand you now.

Every time I'm denied a straw at a restaurant, I'm gonna go to Sam's/Costco and buy a case of 'em just to dump into the nearest river...

...just sayin'...

That will show them  Shocked

Considering the infinitesimally small percentage of plastic waste in the ocean that originates from US based straws, not really... But it'll help me sleep better at night at least.

I haven't yet been denied a straw here in The Republic, but when I am, my Sam's card will be ready!  cooldude

really? you think plastic straws caused that?  Grin plastic straws is just a small fraction of what they were showing. They were probably picking up 95% leftover fishing gear from commercial fishermen.

I never said that it was all plastic straws.  I was just indicating the garbage islands that NASA was showing accumulating over the last 35 years.  All I said is that banning plastic straws was a start.  The US and Canada are small polluters of the oceans compared to the rest of the world.  But, maybe the banning of plastic stars in both north america and around the world will get people starting to think about the bigger picture.
We have to stop thinking that it is someone else's problem and band together and clean up the oceans.  The islands that have been filmed are probably nothing compared to what is under the surface, kinda like an iceberg.  I am sure that the estimate of 8 million tonnes of garbage is a conservative estimate.
Putting your head in the sand, making jokes about it and trying to ignore the problem will not make it go away.
As for the micro pieces of plastic.  The fish still ingest it and then you eat the chemicals when you eat the fish.  Either way, it is a no win scenario for us in the end.
The big problem is that until someone figures out a way to make money from the cleanup, it will just continue to get worst.
