I love riding this time of year. Pretty much the best all year,  with one exception. The corn...on both sides of the road, 7-8 feet tall, and about 5' off the pavement. Here they would plant in the road if they could. Intersections really suck! Then there is one adjacent to a bean field. (at least you can see in a bean field) Why does it bother me? Critters, especially deer that just bolt out of it crossing the road, no warning, just there. After it's picked at least there is an open view of what's coming at you and you have some warning.

Yeah-lived in Illinois long time back. Even in a semi in corn country-well like a motorsickle just takes lots longer to stop!  Lips Sealed RIDE SAFE.

Here in Mesa we are dealing with the "S" word...snowbirds. There are coming back into town in droves...what might be the scariest thing...a person driving and texting AND putting on and taking off their readers. One can only hope that the only people killed when they wreck are others texting or doing whatever besides driving

Yeh, on a long ride down in Prebble and Butler counties of Ohio on Sunday I saw the first fields being taken down.  Yesterday my neighbor across the street started to take his down.  Our corn here in Darke county is 10 feet tall, not quite as tall as 3 years ago when it hit 12 feet, however we did not have as much sun this year, instead just gobs of rain for days on end.

In 2012 while riding a few miles from my house a huge buck ( at least 200 lbs and 10 points or more, I did not count blasted out of the corn in the afternoon of late July, just 20 feet in front of me and scared me pretty good.  I could not fathom how a deer could be traveling as fast as it did in our tightly grouped corn.  I suspect something scared it, but it gave me a new awareness that this could happen.  This year as the deer population grows I have seen at least three casually come out of the corn.  Like Hooter I also look forward to clearing it out.

You guys get our elderly drivers, and that is good for us, but bad for you. I watch everyone anyway now that texting is at a premium. Seems like they've been killing a rider a day here all summer. Various reasons, but a bunch of young adults distracted driving lead the "at fault" cause.

They will chop some of the corn now but wait till next month (may be later) to start picking. If they wouldn't plant so close to the road / intersections that would help a bunch. As much as we hate it in the north, fall is here and "winter" isn't that far off. There is an upside to winter. Then in order to remain sane, I clean and go over all 3 bikes.

RDKLL, yeah I dread it when they show up. It is starting to be the best time of year to ride too. I very rarely ride to work anymore either, all because of the snowbirds. You know, I often wondered, why in the HE77 do they have to be out at prime time? They have ALL day to run errands and go to lunch but NOOOOO, they have to go to lunch at straight up noon when the whole damn work force is trying to get lunch. And then they have to run errands and pick up prescriptions during 4 and 5 o'clock evening rush hour. I just don't get it!  uglystupid2

Went for a 250 mile ride on Saturday.  About half was thru heavy forest type country, rest was open rangeland/farm country.  Didn't see a single critter (except for of bunch of slow elk on the other side of the fences).  AND very few other vehicles.

Only down side, was it didn't warm up enough to get out of winter clothes till after lunch.  Yes, O2S the dreaded "W" is coming.

Up here we get illegals passing through to pick crops. If they get in an accident or other mayhem they simply disappear and head back south to reappear next year under another name.

Seeking out the luncheon specials and the early bird specials to save a buck or three at the local diner or watering hole. You gotta know that most of them are on social security or government pensions.  When you are retired, you never get a day off and have to plan for critical missions during the day to forage for deals.  Most are in bed by 8 PM and resting up for the next day's foraging or weekend yard sales. laugh

5 pm? Really?  I'm just getting my second wind by then, usually engaged in putting dinner on the table so my honey can have her meds on time at 6 pm. Then it's clean up the kitchen, by 8 I'm getting her ready for bed. Usually by 9pm I finally have a couple hours to sit and mess around on the 'puter or turn on the TV and watch the Velocity channel. In bed around 11:30 following the news, up 2-5 times at night to take her to the BR, then up for good around 8:00am. Fix b'fast, get the meds out...and it starts all over again. So.....5 pm.....not in this house!  Grin

I know that, just wanted to make you feel guilty.  2funny  Down here we call them cue tips, you see a car tooling down the road....left lane, 10mph slower than a slug, and no driver. Then pull up next to it at a light and there she/he is(usually a she), barely able to see over the dash, and often with a cell phone in hand. One gal actually had her phone mounted on the steering wheel, steering with her knees and typing away on it. They do use their turn signals quite often, in fact it becomes a guessing game with them since I think most turn them on once they pull out of the driveway....and never turn it off. If it gets shut off after a turn, they simply turn it on again....usually somewhere between 3 blocks and 5 miles before their next turn. My buddy and I followed one driver for seven miles with her right turn signal on, we were curious to see if she actually was going to turn....which she did....to the left.  Roll Eyes

I was thinking the other day on my ride home that we are fortunate these new cars have those lane avoidance things (or whatever they are called). A lady in a new Charger was texting or reading her phone, but she stayed in her lane. Bouncing back and forth like that old Atari ping pong game. Never did cross the line, but she must have put 15 miles on the odometer in a 11 mile route.  ???

I kinda like riding through walls of corn since I know it's temporary. What follows though is spilled corn on corners and random intersections. That I don't like.

I had a rental with lane departure assist.  It does NOT work and NOT safe to rely on all the time.  Unless you have painted lines on both sides of the road and even if you do,  the lane departure sensors do not always bounce you back and forth all the time.  I tried letting the new rental RAV4 do it's thing, but it adjusted steering when crossing center line, but veered to right then and never re-corrected back to the left even when the side painted lines on road were there.

Corn is bad but also the tall grass/weeds all over past the gravel along the roads where I live not mowed where deer are barely visible only able to see the heads of the deer, if that, poking out.  A few roads even have the woods right along the gravel shoulder which is just as bad as corn.  Those are the roads I usually slow down below the 55mph speed limit.

This talk of corn and deer triggered a very interesting memory of an  interaction in a cornfield in Missouri that came to my attention about 5 weeks ago, as viewed by a crop duster pilot.
