Wow just wow a seemingly small gesture makes a huge impact for some. What a beautiful thing to do for those that are going through a rough time.

Iowa Hawkeyes' new tradition is more than just a wave

I was born in the University of Iowa Hospital in 1951 and stuck around long enough to graduate roughly twenty years later.  Been at that stadium ever since I was a child, sold "Get your Frosty Malts!" ice cream trudging up and down those tiers as my "after summer job job", and enjoyed watching Hawkeye sports all of my life.  I swam for them against the likes of Mark Spitz from Indiana.  That tradition of the wave to the kids is one of the things that I'm most proud of being a Hawkeye for.  My wife's 42-year-old daughter lives with us as she is disabled with a form of ectodermal dysplasia, which basically means she was born without sweat glands and therefore cannot regulate her own body heat.  She can't be in an environment of more than 70-75 degrees or she'll overheat and die.  We can't even take her in the A/C car to a restaurant half an hour away on a hot day.  What if the car dies?  So will she.  And she has never complained a day in her life.

I turned her on to the Hawkeye's games about 18 years ago, as well as the Cubs.  Now she will not miss any game that is available and will double check to make sure she tapes them so she can watch them again.  Tears go down her face during the Halftime Wave.  (Yeah, me, too sometimes still.)  She thinks they are waving at her, too.   coolsmiley

FYI, for those who would like to see it live, Iowa takes on the Wisconsin Badgers tonight at 7:30 Central Time, on FOX TV, in Iowa City.  They ALWAYS show the "halftime wave" festivities; probably one of the reasons they get a bit more TV air-time?  Go HAWKS!  (Not dissing my friends in the cheese state.)   Cool

You are absolutely right!  Pardon my error.  Am watching the game right now (had to tape it to get a ride in) so don't tell me who won!  I worked at the Coralville pool one year in my late teens and taught some of the other lifeguards!  You could watch the drive-in movie screen from the one guard chair when the sun went down and the kiddies went home.

Wow, it sounds like it's been a while.  The drive in theater is long gone.

I went to college in Cedar Rapids in the early 70's but spent most of my time in Iowa City/Coralville at a certain bar that is probably long gone.  Wink

Maybe, maybe not!  My parents met at the Airliner Bar (is that on Clinton St.?  Facing the old Capitol Building?) in about 1950.  I was born in 1951.  They eloped.  Do the math.  I believe that bar is still there and that the barbershop (a door or two down to the south) is still there, too, where my dad used to take me for a butch haircut.  My last haircut was in 1979.  I don't mean there; I mean ANYwhere!   Cool

I still visited my mother in the assisted living home in Iowa City until we moved her into Illinois three years ago to be closer to family.  Badgers beat the Hawks last night.  Crap!  And now I find out in this thread that the old drive-in movie theater exists only in my memories.  I remember taking a very beautiful lifeguard from the Coralville swimming pool to that theater on the very night that Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon.  I remember looking out the window of my 1964 Nash convertible, gold with white top, and yes, THOSE front seats, while Kate was nestled into my arm, and I looked out at the full moon, knowing what was going on up there.  As I was watching Jane Fonda in outer-space camp-classic "Barbarella"!!!  You cannot make this stuff up.   coolsmiley

The Airliner is still there, and there is a Hawkeye Barber shop about a block away across Washington Street.  Ewers Men's Store is still there a door or two from the Airliner.

My first real suit was purchased at Ewer's for my date for the prom when I was a H.S. junior.
And yes, that was the barbershop. Thanks for the memories!  Spent most of my swimming, teaching, coaching, managing time at the I.C. park T-shaped pool that is still there.  Huge pool.  Used to have to don a mask with air-compressor sending air to me for an hour under 14 feet in the deep end cleaning it every day with a water vacuum one summer.  No, I wasn't the manager then.  I love Iowa City, and everyone I've run into who has lived there at all says the same thing.  I'm envious of all you get to enjoy there!

Lets just say the certain bar I was talking about in Coralville had "amateur night" every weekend. I believe it was called "Sportsmans Lounge" as i can remember.  There goes any chance of me being on the supreme court  2funny

"Iowa light and power" was a restaurant I used to visit often. Is it still there? Was in an old power plant building.

I took my mother to the Iowa Light/Power restaurant about ten years ago or so.  Watched the eagles fishing while we ate.  Pretty good food.  Really don't know if it's still there.
I think it was the Sportsmans' lounge and I think I can remember just where it was.  It was known to be a bit below the bar, if I remember correctly.  Do they still call it the Coralville Strip running past what used to be Finkbine golf course?  Or have they tried to class it up since the huge mall went in and call it the Coralville Boulevard or something now?    Cool

Yup, Sportsman's Lounge is long gone, and I P & L is now known as the Iowa River Landing.  Still in the old power plant, and the eagles still fish there when in season.

I'm not sure what used to be called the Coralville Strip, as I've only been here 3 1/2 years. Hiway 6 that runs between downtown IC and Tiffin is 5 lanes wide now, and Hiway 965 is called Coral Ridge Drive heading north past the mall and Wally World.  1st Avenue is getting complete overhauled in preparation for the sports / multi-purpose event center.  Lots of new construction these days.
