I noticed recently that one of my front brake pads was dragging. So I pulled the calipers to find the pads were at the end of their life. Upon cleaning everything, and replacing the right calipers pads I found the bracket was froze and would not slide on the two pins. I had to literally hammer it off.

Further inspection found the dust boot had torn allowing water in, and it rusted. I can't recall this happening to anyone else before, so I must be the unlucky one.

Inspect those rubber boots, ya'll.

I was able use a drill to clean out the hole in bracket, and used fine sand paper to clean up the pin. A new boot is on order.

I imagine problems like that, rubber parts aging and failing, will become more commonplace as our bikes age.  Thanks for the heads up.

make sure to use a silicone based brake lubricant on the pins.  I usually fill the hole then push the pin in ans let the excess be pushed out to ensure the cavity is full.  If the boot tears water will not get in if you do this.

You gotta put something on the pins or they're going to stick eventually. I think there was a debate about this and one guy was saying he always puts anti-seize, which is sort of my default lubricant for these applications.  Whatever you use, it's got to be something that can weather the elements and not put too much that it's going to bleed down to the pads or rotors.
