Your age is determined by years not when your SSI kicked in.

Some took it at 62. Some wait.

Take this test and have a good laugh about how old you are in your own mind.
There's a whole bunch more; some simple, some quite complex. ???

I start collecting social security in a couple of months (and deserve every blessed penny smitten) after paying into it since I was 16 years old.
A sigh of relief that Uncle Sap is finally gonna start doling out my "entitlement" before the cookie jar is emptied by his larcenous ways.
I'm gonna "entitle" the hell out anything that is within my sight for as long as it lasts.

I liked that test, it says I am much younger mentally than I am. Too bad my body says I am closer to my real age.

Same here. Clearly it's a flawed test. Or I severely stunted my mental growth smoking weed as a young man.  Undecided

Mentally - 37 (I usually work around those 10-20 years younger than myself)

The IQ test - I've always known I'm well above average, but I didn't think I was that good as that test showed. I do have ALOT of mathematics training (I've forgotten more math than most people ever learn, I was going to be an electrical Engineer).

Today i received my very first deposit of my SSI into my bank account.. guess i dont need all 3 of my valks now?

Sure wish I was 66 again, except without all the stuff I've gone through in the last 14 yrs. I signed up in January of the year I turned 65, it was 3 mo. early and I lost about $25/mo. in doing so. However, I drew full SS for those 3 months so it worked out OK. I continued to work another 15 months and retired at 66, all the while drawing both full SS and my full paycheck. Made some nice bucks for that time, plus it also increased the SS because I had to keep paying into it while working. The end result was having extra income and extra earning credit going into SS, which in the end more than made up for the loss of the $25/mo. penalty for registering 3 mo. early. Don't know if it's the same now, but at that time you could sign up and start receiving SS as early as January in the year you became eligible. My b'day is April 2, I started collecting in January of that year. And, since my b'day is the 2nd. I can count that month as my first fully eligible month making my registration on 3 mo. early. My neighbor's b'day is one day later, April 3, same age as me. Since it's on 4/3, his first fully eligible month was May of that year. He lost a bit more than I due to the extra month, plus he retired immediately so his SS never went up due to earnings. My wife signed up for it at 62 which I tried to convince her wasn't a good idea, she sure didn't need the money. Now her SS is stuck at a lower rate for life, it's not even 50% of mine which it normally would be if she had waited.

I took SS at 62, the same time when I got a package retirement deal from where I worked. Not really sorry about it. Did some contract work for a short period.

Since 1991 ,the year of retirement, I've mostly had a blast. !4 years as a councilman, 25 years on the Board of Works and Safety, an additional 24 years of riding, but only 11 years before my wife passed.

Now, going on 91, I'm kinda like on old car, nickle and dime stuff, slowed down considerably but still enjoying the Miata.  It's time for me to try to get in more practice shooting my handguns and rifles. There is a problem in walking back on rough ground to the 100 yard targets on our shooting club so I guess that's a handicap. Overall, it's been a good retirement except for my wife's passing and a steady dwindling of my fixed retirement income (doesn't buy as much for the same dollar.)

I'm ok in that I still have one toy, the Miata, my eyesight is excellent so that means that I should be able to pass my drivers test for awhile. Indiana doesn't trust us ole geezers so I have to renew every two years.

I think SS kicks in at age 70 for us in our 40s still.  Not sure I want to work much past 60 though.... 2funny   Not like there will be any money left for SS benefits by the time us younger folks get up there.

I really can NOT complain too much as I Only have my SS retirement. The SS pays ALL my bills and I have a bit left over for other "stuff" at the end of the month. Now the month DO tighten up a bit when my vehicle insurances come do BUT keeping my insurance current IS doable. I still have decent health and most of my sub systems still operate sorta like they are sposed to. In fact going for a ride today before the turkey meal. Well I also KNOW things could be much worse so for now it All seem to be workin. RIDE SAFE.

I did some calculation before activating Social Security retirement.  At the age I was then the break even point was 83.  I didn't expect to survive to 83 so it was a no brainer.  Being one with no brain it was a foregone conclusion.

Since then my nutrtionist has tried to convince me that family history is no longer a good predictor of expected longevity.

So I am 38, that was not a bad time for me.

My DW and I sat down to look at the SS issue when she turned 62.  We figured that she would have to live to be 92 before she would break even with waiting rather than taking SS at 62.  We figured that 62 would work for her.

Me, no.  I never had enough credits to pull SS, worked for Fed Gov most of my life.  Though did have some Creds from summer jobs while in school.

Hello, John.  It is all an estimate of how long you are going to live.  After all, that's what insurance is about.  If you plan on starting your payouts at 66, and live to be 67, then you waited too long to start.  I have two pensions coming, neither is huge.  I'll take my best shot at how those are distributed.  Some of that decision is will be based on the fact that women live longer than men.  Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
And a good Thanksgiving to you and yours as well. Re. outliving retirement benifits, my wife didn't think she would live as long as she has. Her Parkinsons was diagnosed less than a year later(now 79) so she's glad she took it at 62. My retirement from the State of Fla. along with the health insurance available is good, add in the SS and it works quite well for us except for one thing....her health issues. Insurance didn't pay for everything and if we have no other catastrophies the cards should be paid down in about 18 more months.

As has been said many times....it's all a crap shoot. Just wondering....how did you fare from the hurricane? A friend of mine in SC lives down in a valley about 4 miles from the shore and and got a pretty good hit.

I've been collecting SSD for 10 years now, but this month my annuity kicked in.
I am now completely debt free and have a decent portfolio. I also own two homes, both paid for (one is a VG rental).

I've married a younger woman that has a very good income and a she has a decent 401K. My daughter (27 yr. old) just received her PhD last week, and she has no student loans (also completely debt free). Now I hope to live long enough to be a grandad. Grin

Life should be good
